Ok phoned 10217 on Thursday last week to order WiMax as my area does not have any copper infrastructure at this stage. The sales person informed me that they have 4 towers covering my area and took down all my details with the promise that someone would phone me back the next day. So on Friday I got the call, they started the order and gave me a reference number. Monday morning I decided to give them another call and was politely told that the order is in progress and someone will call me with an ETA. Tuesday I got a call from the installations department telling me that it will be installed in the next 10 working days. Now the wait begins. Hope for the best.

I hope it's soon, ordered my ADSL but also waiting for them to contact me.

Should have it before 2010 I hope :(

*EDIT*

I tried to order wi-max 2 weeks ago and got told it is not opperational in my area yet. I gave it another try now and it seems that it is up. My wi-max is also on order now. I'll see which one has better lat and give the one that's worse to the wife to play on :)

LOL @ ADSL install date. :D

Cannot believe they are installing your WiMax today. I phoned them this morning and they gave me the same 10 day story again. :(

Telkom gave me the 10-day story as well this morning. It seems they're using Microsoft minutes :)

I went with WA as my ISP, Unshaped FTW. The consultant I spoke to at Axxess doesn't even know about Wi-max and advised me to use telkom as my ISP.

I am holding thumbs that when they eventually do come to install I have LOS with a tower. Even though you have coverage according to their systems it is not 100% guaranteed. I decided to give Openweb a try. Got me the 2GB Semi-Shaped and 30GB Local Only.

Yip...got the 10 day story on Friday, they phoned to confirm my address...i suppose thats a start.

Who is WA? I spoke to someone from Cybersmart, they said they only have about 10 ppl on WiMax that are using them as their isp...hmmm, i hope I get decent latencies :/

So no LOS for me :(

Oros, I have a 1gb Wi-Max account for you.

/cry

Ag no Crawls that sucks. If mine does have LOS I will take that account from you.

Well I phoned Telkom again this morning and they were able to give me a tentative date of the 14th. It might however happen sooner as when an order does not have LOS the other order dates gets moved up. I am just hoping I have LOS. :o

My one mate had no LOS, so he asked his neighbour to set up a WiMax connection on their property...there is always a way...

I phoned and they said the 16th tentative for my install...so allbrain...the race is on...winner takes all :p

Have you managed to have a look on your roof yet? Keep your eyes open...i never noticed the towers before i knew what to look for.

GL man

The race is on indeed. :D Did not manage to get onto my roof last night. My idiot neighbor installed his DSTV dish on a wall I could use to get onto the roof. I will have to monkey move around it to get onto the roof. Tonight I will give it a go.

So I managed to get onto my roof last night and here is what I have found:

1. A dead bird :D

Ok back to the serious stuff. Since I am on the east side of Greenstone Hill I cannot see the top of the hill or anything to the west. But if I turn to the east I can see a lot of red lights. I counted roughly 10 towers which I am sure are mostly cell tower but there must be one or two WiMax towers in between. One tower I can see and thought I would not is the one next to the R24 highway where Isando road crosses it. Holding thumbs some of those towers are WiMax.

Thanks to Kicker I now have the Isando tower location: -26.0753 South 28.1208 East. I checked on Google Earth and it is the tower I can see from my roof. So I have high hopes for a successful install if only Telkom can get there behinds to my place to do it.
