Let's talk Gatsbys

It's a peasant life. Which is why this thread is so popular ... because so many of us are simple peasants.

There two things that I like about a Gatsby.

1) If you have cash you can skip the polony and take more expensive stuff like calamari instead (and upgrade it with more) which makes it a tasty meal for even "middle class" people.
2) For those who don't have cash, I think that any hot meal that costs R50 and can feed 4 people is a good thing.

Instead of handing out a bergie R20 which he might use for drugs, rather buy a 1/2 gatsby when you buy your burger/pizza and give it to him.

For a few bucks you can make a homeless persons day better

Let's talk Gatsby's

I'm yet to have a polony or Vienna gatsby. You could say I'm too... sturvy ...to try those :o

bastids! I just ate and now you got me craving a gatsby.

And I'm not in the mood to make my own :p

During working hours I mostly have vienna gatsby. At home it will either be chicken, steak or calamari.

The last time I had a polony gatsby was probably when I was playing soccer for the under 11 side.

Almost every weekend: My phone can sommer dial it automagically by now ... 853 8883 ... The Food Planet? Hi, Half polony gatsby, secret sauce, 2 cut with R3 extra chips please, kthxbye.

It has climbed a bit in price in time, but 20 minutes later I rock up and pay my R27/R28 for an awesome gatsby that lasts me the rest of the day. One half polony gatsby is actually too much for me and I struggle to finish the whole thing in one sitting, hence the 2 cut.

On-the-run (on the corner across from Shoprite near the beach) takeaways also have a nice gatsby, but they skimp out on the chips and load it up with salad. It tastes quite nice and fresh with the salad but The Food Planet takes the caek though.

ok my aunt owns a take away in strand so normally i go there and make my own...

Sounds awesome - I will order and demand a samr1wp's special the next time I head over there.

I would recomend anyone close to a "Jo Marlin" to get a half calamari gatsby... Its R38 or something.

Jo Marlin there across Food Planet/OK? I probably won't go there again. Shortly after they opened I ordered some chips and stuff there to try them out. My friend tried out the calamari itself and loved it. But that is where the praise stops. With the rest of the order it seems like they merely took some raw chips, briefly dipped them in warmish oil and then dumped them in a styrofoam holder. I gave them a second chance on a next occasion and specifically warned them that their previous attempt was rubbish and that I expect better from a 'fish and chips' shop. Nonetheless they barely outperformed their first attempt and I have not set my foot in that place again.

secret sauce...always wonder about that...;)

I think they just mix their sauces together to form one sauce. Sometimes I need to specifically ask for some extra sauce - it all depends on who ends up making it. Sometimes I barely find any sauce inside and the next time it is lekker sauced up.

I agree their chips aren't the best, but their hake is simply amazing. go there for the hake, and eat it while its piping HOT.

I am not a fan of their calamari t.b.o....
you need to go to that flea market near the aquarium @ the V&A Waterfront... there is a small shop next to the chinese takeaway (next to the exit)
That calamari is the shizz.

Weren't you raving about their gadsby earlier?

No their gatsby was awesome.... it was packed with huge pieces!
when you order their calamari on it's own though, it's small little snippets and a very small portion.

also, calamari without a crispy coating in a gatsby is 100% fine, but when eaten on it's own it HAS to have a coating (which they don't seem to make well)

Ok forgive me I'm a Kaapie too but most of these places I have no clue about...

GD, food planet and a few other names dropped... I've never heard of them, can someone make a list of shops and address, add it to the OP?

Want to try out some of these places.

Let's talk Gatsby's

I'm keen to try them all. I'll even document it, "Search for the greatest gatsby"

The Food Planet - Southside Centre, Cnr of Gordons Bay Dr & George St - Open till late (sometimes 4am as far as I heard)

Be prepared to wait if you just pitch up during their peak times as they are packed on eg. Saturday nights. Had to wait over an hour once.

Cool thanks for that, I'm southern suburbs though so a bit out of my way, but that franchise looks familiar... think I saw a mobile stall at a few concerts and functions.
