I am in the market to buy a headset.

I am not familiar with what specs one would look for in a well rounded headset, and I don't trust the advice of store attendants. I also do not know where to start looking.
I'd love it if a few people could give me a few names to look at, or the name of the headset you are currently using if you are loving it.

I'm mostly looking for sound quality and comfort. It doesn't have to be a "gaming" headset.

Regards
Brent

First question, what are you willing to spend, and second, what is "sound quality" to you..?

I'm looking for above average sound quality. As far as price is concerned, i'm willing to lay down cash and I understand that the current rand directly impacts the price.
Basically I don't want to pay for unnecessary features, only those that have the greatest effect.

If you are going to wear it for extended periods get an over the ear headset, e.g. Logitech G35 (which I've had for probably 7 years): http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/product/g35-7-1-surround-sound-gaming-headset

Sennheiser (even their cheaper ones) have been the best I owned wrt to sound quality.

My only issue with them and most other headsets are the thin fragile wires I always manage to damage. So that is something I take into account when I buy headsets. I most use them for work but my Sony's have been through a lot and haven't broken yet.

Headphones or headsets (i.e. with mic)?

I've found that its much easier to get decent quality if you give the mic a miss.

name of the headset you are currently using of you are loving it.
Well Sennheiser is probably the easiest if you're aiming at above average sound but affordable. If you have money to burn...beyerdynamic

If it has to have a mic then your options are more limited...they tend to be more brand/hype than anything in my experience. That said - I'd probably start with logitech. Though not sure I'd call that above average sound.

Pretty sure there are lengthy posts by DJ and PP floating around about headphones too

Beyerdynamic headsets are beautiful, but indeed out of my price range.

This would probably be at the top of the price range I'm looking at. Looks like a good investment though.

100% agree, wires are usually the first ones to go.

Sennheiser HD 439, you won't be disappointed. :)
I wear them average of six hours a day, VERY comfortable!

Thanks, I will definitely put it on the list.

If you want above average then your only two choices really in SA (without spending R5000 plus) are AKG http://eu.akg.com/akg-products-eu/akg/all-headphones/over-ear.html or Sennheiser http://en-de.sennheiser.com/music-headphones-portable

I wouldn't recommend spending less than R1000 as these headsets, although having great sound, tend to use cheaper chinese mass material parts. The more expense R1000 - 3000 models tend to last a lot longer and are made from better materials. There are 1000s of online posts comparing the various models.

Head-Fi.org http://www.head-fi.org/ is a great resource for reviews and tech info.

Alright, I feel like I have a better base from which to start looking now.
Thanks for the suggestions and opinions, greatly appreciated.
