If anyone is interested, I was able to root my G4 using this method from XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/lg-g4-100-root-success-directives-root-t3180586

You extract the system.img, inject root into it then flash it on to your phone. Not as simple as just flashing a custom kernel like I used to do on my old Samsung phones but at least I have root now :)

Not really willing to take that chance. I don't really see the need to Root at the moment though.

Well with 32GB of mem and still being part of the current update cycle there certainly isn't a need to root. Plenty of time for custom roms and other rooting shenanigans once the update cycle leaves this phone behind.

You mean 32gb of storage? vs the 3gb of memory? Not sure what that had to do with custom roms or the upgrade cycle..?

Some phones has very little free storage (e.g. Sony's M4 Aqua 8GB - 1.26GB free) One could root to remove pre-installed apps or move apps to SD.

Not being "part of the current update cycle" would mean that one could only update (once rooted) via a custom rom...

^ What he said.
Although it's not exactly move to SD. It's more complicated than that which is why it requires root access. It basically tricks the apps into seeing a second partition on your SD card as internal memory allowing you to move almost all data (if you have the full paid version of Link2SD Plus, on the free version the largest chunk remains behind in actual internal memory) of a game to it allowing you to get around limited internal storage on phones.
Not really a concern on a 32GB phone though so that's no consideration.

Which leaves only custom roms as a reason for rooting, which I believe are irrelevant whilst a phone is still part of a company's current Android update cycle (still receiving official updates in other words.) It's only once support for the phone dries up (usually after a year or so) that you may want to be switching to custom roms to stay up to date.

So nope, no reason at all to root the LG G4 at present.

(and yes, I know there are more superficial reasons for rooting, but I'm choosing to ignore those)

Yes, I know what storage/memory limitations some phones have and what he meant with update cycle. I just understood him to say that the two was directly related. Nevermind.

Talking specifically about the G4, the only reason I would root, is to get a newer version of the OS when the G4 isn't part of that update cycling anymore.

When some people root devices but stick to running stock, I'm like wtf :wtf: The little extra benefit that root access gives you is not worth the root imo.

I'll root this morning.

Only reason is that the phone doesn't come with USB reverse tethering off the bat. I need this desperately.

I've done it before to fix the SD card write issue (kitkat) on my LG tablet. Other than that I was happy with stock.

Rooting is for installing recovery, adblock, titanium, all kinds of cool apps need root, last thing on my mind is custom roms. I won't update till I know a root is possible. It does make your life a little difficult though but I would really hate not to at least have system wide(includes inside apps) adblocking.

So far I'm using AdAway, Titanium backup, Greenify (I know its also possible without root) and xposed. I haven't got custom recovery working yet but Chainfire released an app called FlashFire that allows you to flash zips and make backups

Got quoted R85 pm to insure my G4 for R7k with a R350 excess from Santam. Not bad, I guess.
