LG KU990 Viewty

they are advertising it FREE on weekender atm, but yet they dont or never had stock?

Yeah.. :\

When I asked about that a week or two ago, they said that special was only for Midrand. Says nothing about it on their site.

Ah well, it should be easy to get by April, which is when I renew.

WTF

I think all of you Id10ts.
Who here cant get the phone? The damn phone is available, stop posting crap!

i prefer Nokias, atleast if something happens there is more available spares and repair is easier and cheaper.
Nokia software also very nice, especially if you consider smartphones like N82

I'm holding out until one of you suckers get one!

Nah, I'm only up for an upgrade in April :)

1 April :D right? I'd rather go for an N82. It's available right now. Maybe not as pretty as the Viewty but definitely outspecs (is there such a word?) it.

Not a Nokia fan, the N95 was tempting, but the price of it is a bit out of my budget, and I'd rather spend that kind of cash on a PC :)

The Viewty has what I'd like in a phone, the reviews are overall favourable.

Last two phones were SE's and I love them, I'm sort of keen for a change though :)

I've had mine for about a month. Picked it up from vodashop in vodaworld.

Hey guys, I didn't realise there was a thread about this phone here.

I've had mine for around two weeks, so I guess I'll do my bit and write a mini review as requested here and not start a new thread.

Looks:

It is a very stylish looking mobile phone with an incredibly large screen. The back of the phone looks like a digital camera, the top including a two-level shutter button and an image stabiliser/lock-unlock button. Surrounding the lens is a round 'button' which can be guided (much like the ipod). This is for zoom-in and out.

Functionality:

1. Input - It must be said from the get go that this phone only has three buttons on the front, namely Answer (green) Reject/On-Off (Red) and C (Cancel). The rest of the phone is controlled completely via its large touch screen. (A first for me) It took some time getting used to. There are three input options available, the first being a standard mobile phone input (touch screen though), the second is an on-screen qwerty keyboard which works quite well and the third is handwriting recognition (old palm style). The phone comes with a stylus (not built into the handset), but it must however be mentioned that it is not necessary to have the stylus to operate the phone, the screen is very sensitive and responsive and all it's features can easily be handled by using only ones fingers.

2. Features

- Camera - The camera on this phone is beyond reproach. 5 Mega pixel, all the settings you would expect to find on a stand alone digital camera. There is a built in flash and image quality is top-notch in all lighting conditions. Excellent quality Video as well, which can be uploaded directly to YouTube with one tap of a button.

- Music Player - No problems here, simple interface, easy to use. Sound quality is decent out of the built in speaker and ipod quality with the included earphone/hands free set.

- FM Radio - No problems here either, earphones must be plugged in though

- Business Tools - The Memo, Organiser, Voice Recorder, etc are a pleasure to use and synchronise seamlessly with MS Outlook, as does the Address Book. This makes working a pleasure, I just type all my meetings into Outlook as usual and they are transferred to the phone.

There are several features, namely Blogger, Mobile TV and Muvee Studio which I haven't really tried out yet.

- Web Browser - Very cool browser, flips to vertical as well for full wide screen surfing. Supports both WAP and full HTML and from what I can tell, doesn't have any problem opening any sort of page. Browser is controlled by running ones finger across the screen (not at all unlike the iPod Touch - In fact most of the features in this phone remind me of the iPod Touch/iPhone).

- e-mail - I've set up my pop3 account without any hassle and can view my email quite pleasantly.

- HSDPA - Works perfectly, just as fast as the Vodaphone dedicated modem.

Yeah, that's all I can think of. If anyone has any questions, don't be shy. Hope this is of some help to someone.

So I take it some more of you have this phone now. What is the verdict? Is it worth it or is it a crap phone?

I'm really interested but most reviews are 50/50. Seems like people either love it or hate it.

Nice review Velenoso, but still two minded about getting one, do this fone hold it's value like the Nokia? What are the contracts like on MTN?

OK, I've found a forum where a guy made a wishlist for a firmware upgrade and found some discussions on other issues with the phone.

Now I'm just going to list all the negatives I found, I think the positives speak for themselves.

Here's a quick list;
1. LG hardly EVER do firmware upgrades, so if you're under the impression that some things might be fixed later on think again. Only way some people got a firmware upgrade was by sending the phone to LG and waiting a week or two.

2. There's a 2Gig limit on the SD card. You can put a bigger one in but it shouldn't have more than 2 gig free space.

3. The shutter sound is unearthly and freakin loud and can only be removed by hacking your phone(thus warranty void). Also, there's apparently a big delay between pressing the button and the photo actually being taken.

4. 5 Memo's limit

5. 100 To Do's limit

6. No Equalizer for the Media Player.

7. Qwerty Keyboard option not available in all applications(like when you have to type in a web address in the browser!)

8. Fake multitasking(You can't use opera mini while listening to music)

9. Alarm sound doesn't fade in gradually, instead it starts at full blast.

10. Fast forwarding video and mp3 can more accurately be described as "slow forwarding". And media player doesn't remember where you were in a particular clip. So if you're watching a 30 movie clip and answer the phone halfway, you can't continue from where you were and the fast forwarding is slow.

11. Some people have an issue where if the phone is left alone for a few minutes, it just shuts down and won't start up again unless you remove the battery first.

12. No SSL support for IMAP E-mail.

13. Video camera tends to lose sound randomly.

14. Some people have issues where the touch screen loses accuracy after a few weeks.

15. Little bluetooth handsfree support for 3rd party devices.

16. the camera lens needs a cover.

17. No stopwatch or timer

18. Touch screen isn't scratch resistant.

19. Photo quality is apparently no better than the SE k750's.

20. Its difficult to scroll when editing text.

21. The jogwheel feels like it should be on the other side. Using it can be awkward.

22. T9 resets between SMS's.

23. No TXT support, but LG's specification says TXT support

24. Camera settings are lost when swapping from rear to front camera.

25. If you press just under the "spacebar" button while writing a msg, it attempts to close the message and save it to drafts.

26. No Voice dialing(not sure if this is true, please confirm)

27. 100k swf limitation

28. No streaming flash support. Normal Youtube doesn't work through browser, Youtube mobile works fine though.

I'll add to this list as I find more stuff.

Ok, I've used the phone quite a bit now, so here is my response to some of these:

1. Not too sure about firmware, etc

2. Have not tested yet, but what difference does it make? It's not an IPod. 2GB is a lot.

3. You can change the shutter sound to any sound file you like or disable it, and there is hardly any delay between pressing the button and photo being taken. The person who said that should take it easy on the crack or perhaps they had a different model to myself.

4. True

5. True

6. True

7. Yeah, kind of true, you can use qwerty almost anywhere.

8. That is the ONLY thing you can't do simultaneously. Could be some kind of bug. Everything else (including playing music with the built-in browser) works perfectly

9. Yeah, well...

10. You can fast forward just fine, forwarding speed increases gradually when holding the FFW button. Alternatively you just 'click' and drag the slide bar.

11. Never happened

12. Don't know

13. No

14. No

15. Not sure

16. True

17. True

18. True

19. Not sure about that, the camera quality is on par with my Samsung 5MP Digital Camera.

20. A little, but you get used to it

21. A little, but you get used to it

22. No

23. Not sure what 'TXT' means.

24. True, but I don't see any purpose of the front camera other than for video calling. Thus switching to it from main camera mode is pretty pointless in my opinion.

25. Err... just under the space bar is the 'send' button so, no, it does not do that.

26. I think this is true, I can't find voice dialing.

27. Not sure what this means.

28. You Tube works 100% download and upload.

All in all, I still maintain that this is a very stylish phone with some awesome features.
