Hi guys,

Anyone have or know of a list to explain why / what each "area" plate is...

Wait... that didn't make sense to me even... hahaha :D

I'm NX...such a pity we had to go all computerised on the inland Provinces...at least the Western cape and Natal are still recognisable!

It took me 20 seconds to find :P

I have a secret that helps when looking for this stuff....

Howzit!
Can anyone tell me how can I get hold of some SA license plates from the good old days, black characters on yellow background, specially from Natal, OFS & CAPE Province?
I already have a few from Bloemfontein, Cape town & Durban, but I´m looking for all the other huge bunch, from all the remaining municipalities.

Need to make that list into a watch list for cars to avoid with certain plates.
I'll start,

CY - quite possibly the worst drivers on the planet

You should hear me shout "Diiiiieeeeeee!!!!!!!!" every time I see a CY plate  They need to be wiped off the face of the planet

An item of possible interest regarding the Cape Number Plate designations.

When it was initially designed, the idea behind it was that the second letter would be per region, with the letters going from the largest city to the smallest city.

So
CA - Cape Town
CB - Port Elizabeth
CD - King Williams Town
CE - East London
CF - Grahamstown
CG - Oudtshoorn
CH - Queenstown
CJ - Paarl and Franschhoek
CK - Malmesbury and Darling
CL - Stellenbosch
CM - De Aar
CN - Wellington
CO - Calitzdorp
CR - Hopefield and Langebaan
CS - Bredasdorp and Napier
CT - Ceres
CU - Port Nolloth
CV - Vredendal
CW - Worcester, De Doorns and Touwsrivier
CWB - Walvis Bay (Which was then designated as a part of the Cape Province)
CX - Knyana, Sedgefield and Plettenberg Bay
CY - Bellville, Durbanville and Kraaifontein
CZ - Beaufort West

These were all accepted as the Primary Magisterial Districts and smaller towns that were within these Magesterial Districts had the first two letters, i.e. Adelaide in the Eastern Cape, was the 11th largest town of that region, which fell into the Grahamstown Magesterial District was CFJ, with Grahamstown being the 1st Largest of that region.

This made it easy to determine which region a vehicle was registered in. There were however some areas that where given a 3 letter designation before the above idea was implemented, and these were generally along trade routes between area, and these had their area at that time falling under Cape Town. These are clearly seen in the Eastern Cape Towns such as Bedford (CAJ), Cradock ( CAT) and Colesburg (CAS)

This was the initial idea for the Cape Province, which was discarded once the Provinces were broken up, first into homelands and then into the 11 different provinces which we have today.

The complete list for all provinces, homelands is attached.

The Western Cape still follows this pattern. Just Eastern Cape and Northern Cape that have gone the anonymous route.
