Hi guys,

My drivers license needs to be renewed next month but I don't have an ID atm.
My wife lost ours on the flight back from Capetown so now I only have certified copies of my ID.

I have a valid passport and the certified copies, will this be valid for license renewal?
I need to apply for the ID also, so might get a temp ID if that will work.

Going to go to Rayton, but heard Midrand might also not be bad atm.
Any advice on that also, Centurion won't see me again anytime soon.

Last time i renewed mine i just used my old drivers licence card as identification they never asked for my ID. Shows the same ugly photo anyway but carry your passport in case

I renewed my driver's license beginning of December at the Randburg offices. They seemed very stickly about the ID book. The gent in front of me was trying to replace his driver's license using a temp ID and they turned him away. He tried explaining to them that he was the victim of a break-in and they stole his wallet with driver's license and his ID book, so he was had arranged a temp ID. The officials at the office wouldn't hear of it. Not sure if this is legit or poor training as I assume a temp ID would be fine. Some very colourful language was explained. Then a lady a few people behind me in the queue was also sent home for bringing along her passport instead of an ID book.

I think your best bet would be to phone the offices before you get there and confirm exactly what they're expecting, rather than being turned away after queueing for hours. Different branches may have different expectations or train their staff to accept different things.

If your licence has not expired yet then it is still a valid identification. Renewed mine earlier this week without a ID at the Randburg offices.

See my post below. Random Q, how long did you wait at the Randburg offices in December? Jan queue was ridiculous at 3 hours to just get the eye test and I arrived at 7:30 exactly.

Interesting. Makes me wonder how they seem to have different standards about what is acceptable at different times. Inadequate training of the staff maybe?

Was there in the first week of December. Arrived there at 07:00 and there was already a queue. Once they opened at 07:30 it took roughly an hour for the whole process.

This. It is their document, so they have to accept it. If it expired already, no luck.

Renewed mine on Saturday at the Bellville office, they have signs all over the place saying that you need to have a copy of your ID when renewing your licence. They also have signs saying that a drivers licence or ID will be accepted as a form of identification.

I gave them the letter for renewal and a copy of my ID which they accepted. They didn't even request to see my original ID book.

Hope they are the same at Rayton. Tried to phone them today but phone just rang and rang and rang.
Will drive thru tomorrow and see what I can get done.

Don't go to Midrand. There where only about 50 people in the Midrand queue today and the a$$hats were dragging their feet. It took 5 hours to get my renewal done.
Do you have an affidavit saying your ID and Licence were stolen? If so take it along. They accepted it when the guy behind me in the queue provided it as an adequate reason for not having suitable identification.

Edenvale was quick and painless, but I did go in September last year around 10am on a Tuesday. Took less than an hour from start to finish. Previously I went to Kempton, rocked up at 7am and was first in line, was finished within 20 minutes.

Saw your post in another post from last year. After my 2 hours in Randburg I considered getting up and driving to Edenvale it was so painful.

Thanks, Rayton it is then.
ID and License wasn't stolen, wife forgot the IDs on the plane so they are gone. Still have my license with me.

Do you have to pay outstanding fines before they renew your driving licence? Does the system pick up on this?

The system picked up outstanding fines for Gauteng, for a few people in the queue.
So you go through the whole process and at the last step where you need to make payment they slap you with a printout of your fines.
Luckily I don't own a vehicle so no fines for me.

Both valid passports (SA) and Temporary ID's are valid for identification purposes. If they give you grief tell them to read the definition of 'acceptable identification" in the Act.

Rayton was a no go this morning, looked just like Centurion/Midrand usually looks:
Bookings and registration for new drivers opened today to there where 100s of little kiddies running around with their parents in tow to register and get eye tests.

Took a drive to Brits and was in and out in 1:45hrs. They even spoke Afrikaans to me which surprised the hell out of me :D
Didn't check or ask for ID, just a copy of the ID which I had. Took the form and looked at my drivers and was happy with it.

Hi everyone
I have a question about drivers licence renewals (I live in Johannesburg and will go to the midrand centre to renew)

I recently lost my wallet (containing both ID card and drivers licence) in a taxi. Taxi driver has disappeared in the wind. I now need to apply for a new drivers licence card. A government traffic website says I can use my passport as identification but I can see very clearly on the NATIS website that an SA passport is not an option. (see screenshot)
Does anyone know if they would accept a valid South African passport as identification instead?

Renewed mine at Eco Park in Centurion last year, can't remember if I needed ID, I don't think I did.
