I have a large file I need to download and will most likely need to pause it a couple times. I have used DAP but find it very annoying, can anyone recommend a light-weight download manager that can pause/resume and that is easy to deactivate (if it overrides the default browser download manager).

Try Flashget

Very good program and its around 3MB in size. Also it integrates with windows and has support for bit-torrent files

I think the latest version is 1.90 and its FREE

If you happen to use Opera as a browser, it has an excellent download manager built in: clean, no frills, bulletproof. Opera also has its own e-mail client, though it's fairly basic!

lol... FDM is all nice and dandy but Flashget has its own touch of magic. I tried to go FDM route but went back to FG not long after.

Flashget has built in support for torrents, eMule and Rtsp streaming audio/video.

FDM (2.1mb) + BitComet(5.3mb) + eMule(3.8mb) = 11.2MB
FDM (2.1mb) + uTorrent(~600KB) + eMule(3.8mb) = 6.5MB

Flashget = 4.4mb :P

The one I've ended up sticking with is Orbit. It seems the most stable to me.

Still have to get FDM to work in FF3 like it is working in IE, cause when you click on a download link, it downloads with FF3, if I want to use FDM, I have to drag the link to FDM, which makes life a little bit more "bumpy" :D
