We've just had a router damaged by lightning and having now bought a new one, I'd just like to ask what's the best way of stopping it happening again which seems very likely living on the Highveld. I usually take the ADSL line out when I go to work or at night. Not sure if I should be turning off the power to the router as well. It is plugged into one of those surge protected sockets. It seems to take a while to sync again whatever I do. Forgive the ignorance, I'm not too clued up with all this.

The first lightning strike wasn't nearby, but it took out my modem, my cordless phone base unit, and destroyed the NIC in my firewall.

The last lightning blast hit my electric fence (snapping it), took out the charger on the gate motor, and blew my modem and firewall machine, and destroyed my cordless phone base unit. Lucky it didn't take out my TV or anything else.

I'm on my third modem now. This time around, I've had the huge-ass lightning conductor tree in my front yard cut down, I've got a surge protector on the phone line (with a spare in a drawer), and a LAN surge protector on the link from the modem to the firewall. If there's even a hint of a storm, I immediately unplug the phone line. So far, so good.

*touch wood*

Dammit, I've probably jinxed it now.

And the alarm system too if you have one. Some security companies even make fixed connections between the phone line and tel. phone line communicator. Better ask them to add surge protection if they have installed the system in that manner.

Yup, our control box for groud floor alarm were fried twice in two years, but we had lightning damage insurance with ADT, it's replaced and we request them to have two layers of surge protection/filtration for that box now.

All our pcs and printers, fax at home were protected with either clearline or belkin surge protectors for both power and telephone lines, had been fried before (fortunately only fried PSU on pcs).
