Lightning protection

How about this - does anyone have any other suggestions for a lightning protector for a single PC/monitor/printer setup.

IMO if on adsl then you need to convert to WiFi so it's just the router that gets hit. The most exposed is the adsl line.

If you worried about your power line I have a UPS which effectively should bear the brunt of any surge and it supplies power when Eksdom does their thing.

Also nothing will stop a direct lighting strike, nothing that the average person can afford anyhow.

Yes I have power surge/lightening Ellies plugs and who knows if they work or not until that day.

Not sure about the advisability of using it with a laser printer if that's what you've got.

From what I've read it's not a good idea to plug one into a UPS due to the current draw when they switch from sleep to print mode, I'm guessing this AVR might trip if under-rated.

Thanks bud.
Voltage regulators are NOT normally purchased for lightning protection. .....

Fair enough, though it does claim lightning protection and surge protection in the description.

Okay I will check but may just opt-out of protecting the printer, it's not particularly valuable.

Would a decent UPS + an Ellies-type protector be a better solution? I'm asking because this isn't an area I have much experience in, so would appreciate some advice on how you guys would go about addressing this.

A decent UPS is always a good idea and should obviate the need for the Ellies AC surge protector but lightning strikes in JHB are far more common than here in PE so rather look for advice from a "vaalie" :)

I haven't lost a single modem since I started using Clearline surge protectors on the ADSL line.

I agree when specifically aplied to Ellies. [VBG]

Lightning protection in most of UPS's is 'provisional'. Just good enough for few days before you get a good one.

Only way to protect against lightning is to remove all cabling to lan/plug etc otherwise prayer and a good insurance helps
