Lightning replacement cable for iPhone 5

I bought a nice 2m long cable from DX for my SO's iPhone. The cable worked perfectly until the iOS8 release, now she gets the "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably" message whenever the cable is plugged in, and the phone won't charge. It seems that if you don't buy a premium (priced) 'Lightning certified' cable (with the Apple chip in it), the new iOS won't let you use the cable.
And R290 for a 90cm cable is just plain ridiculous.

It seems like a cop out but it's related to the non-chipped cables actually frying a chip inside the iPhone 5 or 5S due to the lack of proper voltage regulation.

They've had so many warranty claims related to this that they've blocked the dodgy cables. The reason Lighting cables are so expensive is because of the chips inside, so I would say if it's less than R100-R150 stay far far away.

It is a cop out. It's a ploy to force users to pay licensing fees on every little accessory.
How is this only a problem now? I'll tell you - Apple designed the Lightning cables to be certifiable such that this could be implemented. Every other manufacturer implements voltage regulation in the phone itself. Apple did this for 5 generations of phones and iPads before Lightning, but now all of a sudden there's 'damage' from non-certified cables? I call BS.

I would recommend an Apple Cable or the 3rd party ones which are official Apple approved. The cheap R100 3rd party cables break very quickly.

They really don't. I have had plenty 3rd party cables for all my devices and all of them work properly and haven't broken any sooner than the branded ones.

SO lost her remaining cable. So it's back to forking out R300 for a farking 90cm cable.
Faaaaark

U can get replacements from clicks for about 50% of the normal price and a few other places but they never last long. Best bet is to just buy the apple cable lol

My iPad cable became so frayed so i bought a packet of White SUGRU from Builders Warehouse and repaired it. 24 hours and it's flly cured and flexible. don't expect further deterioration.

Musica's house-brand cables pretty good quality, around R150, think they're only available in black

I got one at Tangled Accessories in Cape Town, See online store

I'm just buying the mini usb to lightning adapters these days.

The new Apple cables are much better, I used to go through 4/5 cables a year when I had an IPhone 5 and then a 6s.

I now have an IPhone 7 since 18 months and the cable supplied with still works.

I have a few Amazon cables. They're not as flexible as the Apple ones, but they work for charging and syncing. Time will tell how durable they are. I've not had any durability issues with the Apple ones, but they were costing far more than necessary.
