So, I wasn't at home this week and came back to anarchy.

The router was plugged in during a storm last night, the telephone cables were removed from the jacks on the wall, however, we've got a 60m network cable running through the roof to an outside office.

It's a Billion (Telkom) 5102G router, which gave me some good times and I'm sad because I know Telscum will probably give me some crappy Marconi scrap router again.

The 3rd ethernet port blinks on and off constantly and there isn't a cable connected to it. I tried to reset it a few times to see if it won't get sorted, but nada.

It syncs, connects, but loses the PPPoE connection every 3 minutes.

I'm connected with a USB DSL modem at this moment, which I had as a spare (but it was the first time I ever installed one and battled for a good 45 minutes, since the directions are pathetic).

Anyone experience a router do this yet? ;)

Teraside,I had the identical situation occur last week-also after
a heavy lightning storm.I was using a Zyxel router and it was my
1st ethernet port that got wacked.(also blinking continuously)

I must admit that I wasn't 100 % honest with Telkom regarding the circumstances of my routers demise, but seeing as I told them I had signed a 24 month contract, they exchanged it for a new mega 100wr.

A friend of mine had exactly the same problem except on a mega 100.It seems as though most routers are susceptible to this problem.

Thanks MrMikey, I really appreciate the reply ;)

You won't believe how sad I am because of the fact that I won't have a Billion router anymore :(

How is the Zyxel routers btw? Do they support half bridge?

or is it just that your ethernet cables where hit in the roof?
The Ethernet cable is connected to the router in the house (where the first pc is), it runs through the roof and goes underground for a few metres into the office.

This isn't the first time it's happened, we lost the office pc last year due to the same thing.

I can't explain how or where the lightning strikes it, but it does ;)

does the lightning protector that the mega 100 has work?

Don't understand this question

Power - Surge Protector - Router - LAN CABLE

jeppe777, The cable was most probably hit, and with no protection from that side, the ports on the router + the router itself got damaged.

t3raside, My friend protected himself against this a few times by using a Old PC/cheap switch on each side of the LAN cable whenever he needed to run a LAN cable outside temporarily. This would blow the old pc or cheap switch should the cable get hit but saves the rest of the stuff down the line. :)

yip - thats a classic EMP "surge" that got your router.

not a direct hit - but the actual strike had been very close to the house.

you can even have power unplugged , and telephones unplugged - but as long as you have a network cable in the roof - you'll fry something on the ends.

happened to me 3 years back..lost a 16 port and a marconi router.

now when i hear a rumble - EVERYTHING is unplugged..ups aswell.

EMP is considered - lightning - acts of God - so you can claim if the damage falls within claim range.

So why claim if God clearly does not want you to have a PC? :D

Funny how rich people always assume everyone has insurance :p ;) :D hehehehe
