So I had a few disconnects (only one night now it is fine) and the guy from WA said there was some noise on my line which lead me to think how much is a lot and what does it mean...

I got this http://www.internode.on.net/residential/broadband/adsl/extreme/performance/ which seems to indicate I won't get more than 4m from my line... but my question is, what are the accepted values here ? and which value do I look at DS or US my line stats below...

Down Stream 4092kbps
Up Stream 512kbps
DS Margin 5
US Margin 12
DS Line Attenuation 57
US Line Attenuation 37

So my question can some of you clever okes give me some info here I understand it is the noise on the line ?

Here's a nice guide on Line attenuation and SNR margins: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?186156-Understanding-SNR-and-Attenuation-Rates

In short: your line attenuation is too high, resulting in a low SNR, which would lead to an unstable ADSL connection. For a relatively stable 4Mbps connection you would have to have a Line attenuation of less than 50dB.
The line attenuation could be too high due to your house being too far from the exchange or faults somewhere on the line.

tx a mil, noob question is the exchange the telkom box up the street or is that just where the cables are split etc ?

That depends. It's usually just a distribution box but the bigger ones can contain a UMC or what people refer to as mini exchange (that extends the range of the main exchange). If you post a pic we will be able to tell you ;)

hi, im a little confused on this whole line attenuation thing.. does it basically give you an indication on what speeds you should be getting on your line? ie. has the end number taken all factors into account like the exchange..

sorry i dont know much about this stuff but im busy fighting with telkom to get try get 4mb on my line. im currently on the 4mb line and i get 1.5mb/s.

my line attenuation is 47.9 ds so surely i should be getting +-3.5mb/s?

Line Attenuation DS 47.9
Line Attenuation US 25.5
SNR Margin DS 10.6
SNR Margin US 12.0
Data Rate DS 1952
Data Rate US 512
Loss of Signal 0
Loss of Frame 0
Latency FAST

Telkom have told me that im 2.5km away from the DSLAM which, according to them, isn't too bad.
I asked them to re-sync and reset my line, check for noise and to reset the dslam.. They say that im set to 4mb on their side.
Nothing has helped so i logged a fault. they then let me know that there was a problem and they replaced a cable and closed the fault...

I'm still getting the same speeds and now they wanna send someone to me to see if the problem is on my side but they'll charge R196 is they find nothing..

Any help would be appriciated..

Thanks.
