Line attenuation

Hi guys,

Im new to this forum but I was just curious as to why my internet keeps disconnecting and I am getting above 20% packet loss.

I looked into this whole line attenuation and SNR thing to realise my stats seem way off?

If anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it!

I'm running on a 2 meg down and 512 up.

Report a line fault...you should not be getting 20% packet loss with those stats vs connection speed

...Are you sure its the actual router discounting though? As opposed to the ISP disconnecting? Seems unlikely but asking anyway...

You have to divide your SNR and attenuation by 10, those stats are really good. Have you tried swapping out routers or trying another ISP?

I have tried using another ISP and it is still the same.

I currently game quite a bit, and according to the client connection info in TS3 It climbs to about 60% packet loss then disconnects me from the TS server...

Games like WoW and LoL are unplayable, games that are hosted on local servers seem okay although i do still experience loss in CSGO.

I have asked telkom to reset/recreate my ports (didn't help) and proceeded to report a fault, so we will have to wait and see.

Just out of interest, could a LAN cable that is old and torn up be an issue at all? I havent tried another pc or used another cable as I will have to go out and buy one.

Thanks a lot guys!

Dlink stats look confusing because they lack a decimal. Your stats are:

Down
SNR 22.0
ATT:33.0

Up
SNR: 12
ATT: 20.5

Audible noise on the line? Have you tried disconnecting all handsets?

Its very unlikely that it's the ADSL link/sync causing the packet loss. Your stats are great, with just about no DSL error counts.

A dodgy LAN card/ethernet cable could be a possible cause. The telkom exchange "back-haul" or even something more upstream could be the cause too.

So, I'd say eliminate your equipment first. Try:
- another ADSL modem/router if you can
- Another LAN cable
- Another PC if you can

If you've ruled out all of the above, then the problem is most probably on Telkom's side.

Good Luck.

I concur with that.

Your stats look very good. Switch to ADSL2+ modulation and you should see an even further improvement on the stats (Thats if the exchange supports that)

Wow, didn't expect such good feedback :D

I stay in Randburg.

I will try all of the above, but just asking if my LAN cable could make a difference?

Thanks a lot guys!

I have tried all of the above except for a different PC.

Telkom came to my house only to ask me for a call out fee as my line is fine...

This is highly frustrating as every night my packet loss climbs from 10% upwards!

Games like WoW still unplayable (2000ms + world ping)
I play a lot of CS:GO and we use a website (http://play.intoxicated.co.za/csgo) for pickups, I used to be getting 20-50ms on the website, now i get over 40k ms, and it eventually goes to NaN(not a number) as its too high...

If anyone has a clue as to what I can do, I would love you forever :)

Thanks guys

Regards

Okay, some other things you can try

a) Ping your ADSL router, let this run for a bit, press CTRL-C to stop it.
- ping -t 10.0.0.2
b) Ping your WAN gateway
- First find the WAN gateway's IP by running "tracert google.co.za", take the second IP in the list (first one is your router)
- Then "ping -t WAN IP", CTRL-C to break.
c) Perform a Bit Error Test, your modem supports this. Check the manual, or scratch around in the router's web site, its called "ADSL BER Test"

If (a) results in packet loss, your equipment is to blame.
If (c) shows bit errors, well, then it could be your modem, line or equipment inside the exchange.
If (a) is fine but (b) results in packet loss, either your ISP or Telkom is to blame. If performing test (b) with a different service provider then its Telkom.

Don't know what else you can try or do. After you've ruled out everything on your side, maybe try to contact TelkomZA on this forum.

Its normally the opposite, GDMT give the better stats.

In a perfect world correct, with 3 of my clients lines and my personal lines the stability and speed increased by moving to adsl2+, the SNR and Attenuation showed marginal improvement. Stability was the biggest gain though.

Okay, so I pinged my router and all was good, 0% packet loss.

I pinged my WAN Gateway, and i got Request timed out, 100% packet loss...

Performed the BER Test, and I got no bit errors, but I will try ping my WAN gateway using another ISP.

Out of interest I pinged www.google.co.za and got 0% packet loss, BUT a minimum of 197ms, max of 339ms and an average of 204 ms. Is this not high?
So I ran a trace route too google.co.za and spikes at a certain hop. Can someone let me know what this means?

That looks pretty good actually.

The big spike in ping is because its from a server in the UK ;)

Perform a few tracerts to some local and international sites the next time you experience the packet loss.

If you haven't done so already, try out a different ISP (I recommend a WebAfrica free 1 GB account, they run on the Internet Solutions Backbone)

Just ran a trace route the WA account. A total of 6 hops, max 24ms... Trace complete.
I pinged my WAN gateway, it actually went through and was decent at an ave. of 74ms.

All seems good to the local servers, so I ran a trace route to the WoW server that i play on and one of the hops spikes up to 500ms, okay its not the end of the world. But why is my World ping over 1000ms :(

I than proceeded to run a tracert to play.intoxicated.co.za (the pickup site i cant use due to lag) and the trace route had a max of 15ms yet took really long to finish... I had to wait at least 30s for each hop, if not more.

I have spoken to the admins and it is working, there are over 50 people currently connected to the site.

Could Load-shedding have anything to do with this?
