Hi everyone,

I'm feeling pretty stupid at the moment and would love some advice re my telkom line installation (if possible)

I live in a complex in a unit that has never had a telephone line installed before - the telkom technician arrived today to install my line and found that the "guide wire" had snapped and as such he said that he was unable to pull the telkom wire thru from the box outside. He said that I needed to get an electrician to install another guide wire and only once that was done would he be able to assist me.

I phoned the complex electrician who told me that 9 times out of 10 it is impossible to install the guide wire required and that best case scenario I was looking at having to do some magic work around installation requiring body corporate approval and a whole bunch of other stuff.

I just want my line installed ASAP so I can get on line (I've been waiting two months since requesting the line installation).

Does anyone know if what I've been told makes sense, or would telkom be able to do the installation without a guide wire (or put the wire in themselves?) and also, is putting in a new guide wire as much of a process as the electrician is claiming?

Any advice/insight would be great!

Thanks!

Yes yes. See, Building side you need permission from body corporate to run surface. The wire Telkom broke is in a pipe which should have a junction box every 2 bends. It sounds as if the pipe is blocked. To unblock is is heavy work. Go talk to chairman of the body corporate about running surface.

Unfortunately you have to go through the body corp for something like this, but generally this kinda work should be done by the body corp, by their chosen electrician. Depending on your BC, they should be fairly willingly to sort it out for you :)

Hi there,

Thanks very much for all the feedback etc - much appreciated!

So, the complex electricians arrived this morning, and luckily the external Telkom box is located against one of the walls of my unit, so 30mins and a very angry girlfriend later I now have a hole drilled through the wall from the Telkom box and a wire installed.

Telkom are scheduled to come out later today to complete the line installation.

Once this is done, do you guys have any advice on the best way to get ADSL activated? I am thinking of doing the self-install option and have a wireless router/modem etc - the website mentions needing to go to a Telkom direct shop etc, is this really necessary, or can I just call them and ask them to activate the line and then set everything up with the router I have at the moment?

Thanks again for all the help guys - it's really appreciated!

Select the Closer 1 package, so that you can get your ADSL installation done for free.

Also select the Self Install option and buy your own ADSL modem/router, because the ISP supplied ones are usually outdated and terrible.
Once they've finished the ADSL line installation and your ADSL is up and running, then you should go to http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl to activate your ADSL.

And lastly, try to avoid 12 - 24 month contracts. Today is the last day that you can still sign up at Mweb for their 6 month contract where you get 2 months for free ;)
