Is upgrading say from 386kbps to 4mbps just a matter of phoning Telkom and getting them to change it?

It all depends on how much you buy the technician for.... :P

At 10:30 I phoned Telkom (10219), by 13:00 that same day I went from 384k to 4Mbps :p Maybe I was just lucky...

Or you could go into Telkom Direct, but rather phone, its quicker.
It can be done in 15 minutes, if not less. Its just a matter of changing something on their PC.

Well I phoned them they said will be done in 24-48 working hours and they will call when it is done.

Check now - its just a setting they have to change and normally only takes a few hours rather than 24-48 hrs. That's their standard response.

Should it not be 4Mb/s?

EDIT: and I just tested it on http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and it came up with this:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 1454 kbps (181.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 387 kbps (48.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

What's going on?

You should be getting arounf 400KB/sec

Try a download from http://www.mirror.ac.za

Was testing a bonding solution earlier and got 1.6MB/sec from them :D

Ok yeah I'm getting 460...

What rate does your router sync at, look at that first.

Secondly download via FTP a file from a local server to get a better indication.

Try this as well, http://www.gam.co.za/index.php?class=page&objectID=4888add306302

How do I check the router sync?

Here are my results from that site:

Download Speed: 3404 kbps (425.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 421 kbps (52.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Should the download speed not be closer to 4000kbps???

You'll never get full speed internationally. Local, sure.

Yes it is perfect. If you look at it per math your download speed should be 512 KB/s (4096/8) but because of noise on the lines it is normal that your get 15-20% less. So around 400-425 is fine.

i went up from 512 to 4 and it was done in about 3.5 hours, really quick, i got it changed on the same historic day of the flying pig lol, no it was quick
