Line Syncing but no ADSL!

I was under the impression that once you had a sync on your line, your adsl connection was just ready to go - I'm getting a sync light on my router but it's unable to make a PPP connection. Is there a chance there's something configured incorrectly on the router? - The log on the router contains errors like 'call failed' and there's no indication that it even tried to authenticate my credentials.

If I'm getting a sync, I presume that means my line is terminating in a DSLAM which means a port has been allocated & my line connected to it. Does anyone know what still needs to be done (ie. by Telkom) before the line will be operational? Technical info would be appreciated! :)

What router you got?
Did it work b4?
Have you checked your username and password?
When did it happen?

Did you take a self-installation option?

I've heard of a lot of cases lately where people take self-installation and it takes ages for their line to still be activated. It seems that once you are sync'ing and hooked up to a port there's still some other level of activation that needs to be performed.

Call Telkom.

I can't remember the exact model but it's a 1 port usb/ethernet planet router (supports adsl2 as well). It's brand new and I haven't had chance to tested on a line I know works yet.

The diagnostics section in the routers web interface says something like 'Test ATM OAM Segment Loop Back:failed"

@jacobstone - yes, self-installation. That's what I suspected but was wondering exactly what our dear friends need to set up! By 'ages', exactly how long do you mean! ;)

Sorry for asking.... Did you enter your username and password in the router?
If you have then go to the status screen of the router and check if it says connecting... If it stays on connecting the whole time, phone telkom and tell them to activate the line and to do a ADSL port reset.

oh yeah - used the telkom test account. I don't see it saying "connecting" anywhere - just has a status of "not connected". I'll try phoning Telkom a bit later. Drove the other guys in the office crazy yesterday - had the phone on speakerphone for 15mins waiting for them to answer so everyone got treated to that patriotic telkom tune approximately 100 times!

Think of the sync as having a dial tone between you and the exchange.
It means you have a physical connection to the DSLAM - the authentication happens further upstream at the ESRs.

I've had that happen a few times when the Telkom ESR (Edge Services Routers) were down in my area. Normally lots of people are affected and you'll see lots of "why can't I connect" messages on the MyADSL forums. :p

What does your router/modem logs say?
They usually have a bit more info than just "call failed".

Get the router logs. When I got hard capped the ADSL would connect but it would not establish a PPP connection (Hard Cap). It is near the end of the month, are you sure you have not been capped?

I haven't even set up an account yet (only found I had a sync last night) so I just tried the test telkom credentials. I'll post details of the log tomorrow if I'm still having issues.

Their is a telkom site where, on the self install option, you have to enter your number to "verify" your line. I'll find it and post shortly.

Thanks - tried that but this morning there seems to be a problem with the server - the page refreshes several times after you put in the details and then says there was a problem. When I accessed the page yesterday it said "your adsl service request has already been processed" or something like that.

Techie phoned me today to say he will come to install mine tomorrow. so I pluged in my modem and mine also syncs but cannot connect to anything

So looks like its normal and they still need to switch on our access

interesting. well, I'll post an update when I find out what's going on for future reference.

Had a similar problem the other day. Telkom reset the exchange port I think and that seemed to fix the problem.

Here's the log from my router -

1/1/2000 0:3:25> Call Failed
1/1/2000 0:3:31> netMakeChannDial: err=-3000 rn_p=80435ea8
1/1/2000 0:3:55> Last errorlog repeat 9 Times
1/1/2000 0:3:55> Call Failed
1/1/2000 0:4:3> netMakeChannDial: err=-3000 rn_p=80435ea8
1/1/2000 0:4:25> Last errorlog repeat 8 Times
1/1/2000 0:4:25> Call Failed
1/1/2000 0:4:26> netMakeChannDial: err=-3000 rn_p=80435ea8

Also, my downstream attenuation is 54dB which I understand is atrocious. Is this purely because of the distance from the exchange or can it be influenced by other factors?

Heh... Don't know how long mine took to activate, as I went out of town on a Thursday night, no sync, no adsl, came back on Monday morning, got sync, got adsl (did self install). Telkom techie phoned me two weeks later to ask if he could come and do the install. Idiots.
Anyway, problems developed on my port a few weeks after that, which ended up with me having sync according to the modem, but no connection. Phoned Telkom and complained, and they managed to get it going again three days later. It's happened to me again twice since then (about once a month), so it is definitely possible to get sync without being able to connect...
