I have put through a fault and I'm sure Telkom are working on it, but thought I'd ask the smart people here that knows how the whole network works what they think.

Telkom upgraded the infrastructure in my area (Northriding) October last year and sent through promo guys to promote their 20mbps ADSL2+ , which I took up. Real world speed continually 17mbps - fantastic!

1. Tueaday - Aside from one or two glitches, been very happy with the service - until last week Tuesday I get home and line dead. No dial tone. Nothing.

2. Wednesday - I log the fault the Wednesday morning and Telkom arrive at my gate a few hours later. No phone calls ... And no one there. They leave without phoning afterwards too. That night I have dial tone back - but 12mbps now and dropping every few minutes.

3. Thursaday - Telkom again arrive at my gate Thursday ... With no one there. They leave. This time I back and I'm running at 15mbps and drops after a few hours only. Slightly better

4. Friday - I think they're going to the same thing and pitch up Friday , so organise someone. They don't :( and that evening is most my speed but slightly unreliable, similar to Thursday

5. Saturday - I'm at the shops and Telkom call to see if my issue is still there. I tell that it has been on but unstable and he should phone Monday after I use it for the weekend. I get home later and from that point won't sync at all. Dial tone but no sync.

Anyone fathom a clue? I guess not congestion as too sudden, I also reckon not failing or old infrastructure, as the upgrade was less than a year back.

I reckon they have changed something because without access to my property, dial tone arrived when I logged the fault.

May be coincidence, but I also reckon Telkom did something Saturday to make me not sync

Anyone have an idea?

Sorry i cant offer a remedy but im going thru the same - but they cut me for non payment in the middle of the month (in error as Im up to date) it worked for 3 hrs then having the same symptoms. They said I should take leave until someone comes to my house. WTF

I realized last week I hadn't paid the previous month and quickly paid ; but they confirmed that payment wasn't the reason and I can still dial out. I'm almost certain they've touched something outside the property and don't require access into my house to repair whatever they've done.

That said, I'll gladly let them in if they phone instead of just pitching up

Have you asked Telkom to recreate your port? (its a phone call to the fault department)

The techies should do this but who knows.

Happened to my 10 meg line after about a year, for a few days inet went crazy phoned them reset port problem solved.

Ah nah I haven't done that. Thought they'd possible do it.

If I leave my router off for a few hours, wouldn't it reset? Or do I specifically need to ask?

I think you have to phone or you reconnect to the same port once you turn it back on (but I'm no genius on the Telkom network).

I would say give them a call there is a good chance it will fix your problem.

Thanks!

EDIT : Just tried to call them now and as I enter my number, says 'your number is linked to a general fault in the area' At least I feel something is being done

Good luck with that... those "general fault" things have been known to last many months.

Phoned them for a port reset - worked for about an hour at 18mbps and then just stopped. Refused to sync

... and just arrived at my gate a 3rd time without warning :/

They don't seem to understand that should call - either before or after - so that I can arrange someone there. They must cost Telkom a fortune simply driving around and not being to sort the faults, when a 2 minute call can prevent this.

The technicians here always call first before coming here so I find that odd and did they check the drop line from the pole if there was any fault on it? that is where the fault was on my line and after they replaced that my line has never had a problem again.

They plugged in a box (can't remember the name) which told them how far the break was on the line and eventually found that a tile chipped the cable as it was being pinched.
