LinkedIn probing possible password theft

Happening all over recently... Whmcs was also hit the other day. :-(

It seems encrypted passwords were leaked so unsure what encryption was used so passwords might not be compromised.

I have an issue with the article's ending.

He said users should ensure the password you use is not used on any other websites, and hard to crack.

“If you were using the same passwords on other websites — make sure to change them too. And never again use the same password on multiple websites,” he said.

I just had a look at my firefox password list, and quickly counted over 100 websites. So, by extension, I will need over 100 hard-to-remember unique passwords. Easy, I store them in my browser password list. Which works, right up until the point that I re-install my OS or buy a new machine. Or my HDD dies on me. Since not all browsers support online synching, I may lose the whole list, and hence my access to all these sites. And resetting the passwords is just a pain. A password safe is possible, but then you have to carry it with you.

Or even if I travel, without my desktop/laptop, and have to access a site on a friend's computer, or on my phone. Another mission to gain access. Yes, I can use my google/facebook account as well, but then, if that gets cracked I give an attacker access to all those accounts at the same time.

In short, we need a solution other than hard-to-remember passwords to secure our access to the internet.
