Linkin Park Cape Town - Concert Post Mortem

Perhaps a title in bad taste, given what happened last night. First and foremost on that matter, my sincere condolences to this young lady's family and friends. If you knew her, my thoughts are with you at this time. Here's hoping that all the people injured in this unfortunate incident make speedy recoveries.

Regarding the concert itself then. Was the sound really as bad as I thought it was? Man it was poor (at least where I was standing - about 40 meters to the right of that central control tent). I was at times able to conduct regular conversations with my mates while the band was in mid-song without hardly having to raise my voice.

I am under the impression that the band don't bring their own sound engineers and equipment, it gets supplied by Big Concerts (in this case). Have BC fluffed another one? It sounded like a horde of taxis was parked outside the stadium with their sound-systems pumping.

Still, I won't take anything away from the band themselves. They were massively entertaining with an awesome set and stunning visuals and they really got the crowd going. I enjoyed Chester's momentary forgetful lapse of his lyrics. He made light of it and moved on.

I am glad to be able to tick LP off my concert bucket list. Now just to get Foo Fighters, Metallica and Creed here

They are not one of my favourite bands but I enjoyed seeing them in the UK. They are very interactive and I hope for all those that saw them last night it was a good experience.

I thinks its just me, but i prefer them to get on with the show then put in all the lame interaction like when they say - "Are you having a good time tonight south Africa?" "I cant hear you. South Africa, are you having a good time?" I find that lame!

Last night's concert rocked in Golden Circle (sound was good). I heard a number of people complaining about the sound at the back last night after the show. Cold Play and Kings of Leon also didn't have great sound at the back. Looks like an ongoing problem at the stadium. They definitely need to improve it.

At Metallica it was so bad that they almost left the stage.

like I said to a friend of mine... whoever daclared that scaffolding safe, whether its a person or event company, needs to be brought to book. Do people not have any kind of common sense these days?

It was blowing a gale in town the whole day, and then have scaffolding 3 stories high wrapped in advertising (effectively turning the damn thing into a massive kite...) declared safe??? :wtf:

Take them to the cleaners.

My Golden Circle Experience:
Sound was pretty good, but not amazing. Performance by the band was good for the big songs but on some I felt they were just going through the motions, especially a few of the older ones. Very happy overall though.

My biggest disappointment was the crowd: super chilled. Was really expecting more energy and movement, but most people just stood there taking videos on their phones. Lame!

Yeah they were. A mate of mine got married on the day of that Coke Fest but has subsequently got divorced. If I'd known back then what was coming I would've probably gone to the concert! I would want to see them though as a concert on their own and not part of a festival.

What a night.. Been looking forward to it for a while. Shortly after booking my General Admission ticket I realized I had a business management exam at 11h00 the morning after (yes today) so unfortunately I knew I couldn't go as big as I would have on any other occasion. This coupled with the broken shoulder I sustained over the weekend really put a damper on things. Nevertheless I had a blast.

Organisation was pretty good this time around, didn't stand in any queue for longer than 5 minutes the whole night. MyCiti bus service was excellent. No queues and 30 or 40 thousand people? respect. Heard people speaking about the freak accident but I don't think many people really knew what was going on until afterwards. The wind was crazy strong, as you can see from the videos. My face and eyes feel like they have been sand papered haha.

Kongos were REALLY good, will definitely be paying them more attention in the future. One of the best opening acts I have seen in a while.

Linkin Park of course were in another league, whilst I agree the crowd was pretty chilled for the most part (probably because the show was mid week, mid exams wtf) when they played any of their many known song there was an unbelievable energy. People only really lost their minds like I thought they would during the encore. During "In the end" the crowds singing was louder than Chesters.

The sound quality wasn't great but I think wind had a big part to play here. Winds were gusting 60kph upwards and swirling bigtime, could easily be seen by the smoke from the smoke machines. There were periods of crystal clear audio for a few seconds followed by a definite drop shortly afterwards and this continued the whole night.

Annoyances:
Chester was lip syncing a couple of times.
Waited over an hour for LP to start after Kongos. I think this is why the crowd was so chilled, everyone was half asleep when they came on half an hour late. This was due to the accident and the technical teams could be seen securing the speakers on the main stage and towers.

RIP to the lady that lost her life.

The sound seems to be a stadium issue, and one they're well aware of. Had a chance to chat to the head sound guy in that central control tent earlier in the day (something with an H... I'm tempted to say Hooch). He said that they use local guys for the sound set-up, and mentioned some of the issues that they were facing, specifically that the sound was only really good for the front half and chatted about the steps they were taking to make it decent for the rest - but said there was only so much they could do.

I was there with friends who'd been at the back for Coldplay, and they mentioned how fantastic the sound was this time around (we were right in front) compared to that time.
