Linking to copyright downloads.

Can one get in trouble if you link to free copyright downloads from a website?

By linking to almost *any website* you are linking to copyright content.

Oh ya lol. Ok let me rephrase. Can one get in trouble if you link to free downloads of copyright content if it isn't hosted on one's site?

If it's not yours then you cant use or promote it. Basically if it's not yours you cant do anything with it.

I think that if you say something like...i found a nice music video here[insert link]...
Then it would be okay.

What if you say: Here is the download of Joe Soap's latest single: <link>

Nothing wrong with that imo.
And as long as your not creating the impression that it's your content, you should be fine.
I would imagine that the people who are making money from the downloads will be happy for the customers your sending their way for free.

?I could be wrong though...?

As long as you arent hosting it,charging to get the link,or unwilling to respond to a cease-and-decist ( also known as a take-down notice ),or breaking the TOS of the webhost - it's fine

Does this mean one can't link to it?

Hmm maybe I should just ask them :)

They basically said no here

Hi Pooky,

No respectable host would allow a client to have links to illegal / copyright content of any nature.

It does not matter that they are links and you are not hosting the content - if you get a DMCA complaint because you are aiding in the distribution of the content, then you (and potentially the host) will be in deep water.

It says pirated software... Not music...
