Hi guys as the topic says I need router help - dug up my old wrt54g to setup my home network - but heres the thing I lost my power cable - have a multi purpose plug where I can set the voltage level - what kind of power does this unit need , can anyone confirm what they use? - Thanks

Secondly my netgear dg834g v3 - I need help forcing this unit to power off and on - kind of like a full reset but without erasing the details - why? - because this unit is inside the house - I stay in a flat outside and our sync speeds are often horrible - usually have to go inside unplug router - plug it in again - this is a pain when I dont want to wake people up at night, im looking for a way to do this via telnet with putty - any ideas?

Thanks
J

Netgear: Does just rebooting it (via the web interface) not cut it? If it doesn't you have no choice but to cut the power totally.

Only option I can see is restore factory settings but a) the firmware that was on router has issues doing pppoe relay - hence I use older version - will it flash to default of last firmware loaded or original firmware and b) will it cut wifi access because I will be doing this via wifi.

The Netgear has an option to soft reboot it, I think it's under a menu called troubleshooting or something like that. Where the ping test is. Unfortunately I don't have access to one at the moment, so I can't check.

The Linksys WRT54G uses a 12v 1000ma power charger!

Thanks found the reboot menu - but line fails to sync if I do it this way ? - weird - if i pull out power it resynchs.

Wrt the Linksys I smelt a burning smell but gonna try a 12v adaptor and see having issues with it dropping network connection on/off/on/off almost instantly - nothing in windows logs.

I think something is fried with the linksys - power light just keeps flashing nothing else happens. Smells like it could have burnt somewhere

If i give the linksys a tap/smack underneath all the wlan/ethernet/internet lights come on... is this unit fried? power led is always flashing , nothing else is on till I tap the router in which case all lights come on then off - flashing this with dd-wrt would have voided the warantee I suppose despite the fact that it was running fine with that firmware for about a year, fine on alchemist too :(

J

think its fried - anyone that can help me verify this would be awesome - if it is where can I purchase a linksys of same quality - wish to use dd-wrt again which is the best version to buy/model - who has stock and doesnt charge an arm and a leg in cpt or an etailer.

Also where could I get the required adapter for a linksys wrt54g - the one rhyder mentions above - want to test adapter first as it could possibly be that and not router.

Thanks
J

it's not really going to help you. In my experience the Netgears are just as good on bad lines as anything out there. If the line is bad enough to lock up your Netgear, it will lock up whatever else you throw at it.

Another way might be to use pppoe instead, if you have a cable running to the modem. That way if the line screws it won't screw the modem but the pppoe software, i.e. on your PC. Saves you having to walk to the house.
