Which capture cards have you guys been successful with on Linux?

Has anyone had any experience coding for a capture card?

Ok, one must be very careful not to waste money. I speak of experience.

First off go here and see if your hardware is compatible.

Secondly, precisely what do you plan to do? Building a media server? Without a doubt go for Hauppage. The PVR-150 is not a bad choice.

I don't have any hardware yet. I'm finding out what to get :p

You still havent answered what you plan to do. Build a rocket? Make a dining board, what?

Why should he have to say what [-]nefarious?[/-] programming task he's gotten into ..don't you know that the first rule of not being busted is not talking about it? :D

Well, if he intimated what it could be we could help him make a better decision. :D

My old Lifeview 3000 tv card, (it's not digital/dvb, it's an old card) works lovely in Linux, uses the Philips SAA7134 chipset, perfectly supported and better picture quality than some high end TV's I've seen.

my winfast tv2000xp expert card works in Linux for viewing TV. I think I even once got it to work in MythTV. But for PVR purposes I would go for a hardware encoder. There are many people with Hauppuage experience so that would be a good choice.

i also use the winfast tv2000xp card in a linux based system (currently knoppmyth r5.5)
but have been using it for aprox 2years since r5d1 setup was automatic for the card.
the fact that it wasn't hardware encoding
has not been a drawback. commercial auto skip 100% effective. watch one old recording
while recording another still smooth playback.
changed my tv lifestyle hardly watch live tv lately

I'm quite happy with my Hauppuage PVR500.

First decide which software package has the features you want, and then check what hardware is supported by the software.

I have been using MythTV for a few years and absolutely love it!
