Linux Certified Laptop in SA

As long as most of your laptop's components are made by Intel or nVidia, there shouldn't be any compatibility problems. The last incompatibility I experienced was with my previous laptop's GMA950 graphics, and that was fixed after about a year. There was also a workaround available while waiting for the permanent fix.

Don't forget to check out Windows 8.1, much lighter on the hardware requirements nowadays. ;)

What screen res do you run at? :wtf:

+1, most modern laptops have Linux drivers etc. So what is "Linux Certified"?

When it is tested and proven that all hardware drivers work. Not all products from ATi or nVidea run on Linux. Buying a machine that is certified for your OS is a benefit.

Someone mentioned that it is ssometimes cheaper to buy a laptop with Windows loaded than one without OS pre-installed. The problem in SA is that distributors void warranties if the OS is replaced. With the Mecer laptop, that won't happen.

Computermania iss the only retailer cum distributor who do not void warranties.

There are cheaper Mecers - look at others at http://www.comx-computers.co.za/mecer-laptops-south-africa.php and most are quite configurable. For instance, W550SU1 costs R8,157 when configured with i5 Haswell 2.5GHz, 1TB 6GB/s hybrid hard drive and 8GB RAM. It will fly Linux at lightning speed and it costs less than even a used MacbookPro or used top brand machine with similar spec.

And you still have a warranty, something a used machine does not have.
