I've updated the chat script for the USB linux drivers at http://rodent.za.net/MyLinuxDrivers to set the PPP context properly before dialing.
This should negate the need for Linux users to first "program" their modems on a Windows PC with a username and password. It also helps to avoid the "NO CARRIER" message when the modem has been turned off, or lost it's NVRAM settings.
