Hi

Ok, I am going to take the dive and start getting myself aquainted with Linux. I have a question as a complete newbie, does the Datacard work under Linux and where can I get help on getting it setup. Please note that I am very rusty and have limited Linux experience. The main reason for taking the dive.

Hello Diago,

Three main questions

1) What datacard have you got?
2) What distro are you going to use?
3) What are you going to use to dialup? wvdial/chat/ppp/minicom ?
 
1) To my knowledge the Novatel card.
2) I have a choice between Ubuntu and Red Hat 9.0
3) Hmmm... TBH - Uhhh ?

Sorry I am a complete newbie to linux.

1) No problems
2) Fedora Core 3 if you can - RedHat is still on the 2.4 kernel
3) Will sort this out later :)

See if you can grab FC3, really worth it and then we can start... :D

linux

good luck, I've been wrestling with fedora 2 just to get my bluetooth running with my t610. that was the easy part. try get a GPRS dialup working...now that i still need to acomplish..... :eek:

Hey Snowolf,

Sounds like you need some help - wanna give me details on serial ports detected etc ? Kernel version,bluetooth version etc ?

What dialup software you using?

Just to let you know - I have both the Novatel and Option cards working 100% under Linux

well I found an interesting problem, linux sees the sony ericsson t610, can do a lping, but when I run the bluez gprs dialup script it changes setting on the phone an the phone is rendered useless, I have to setup internet.GPRS again.
thank goodness for *111#
methinks I will stick to my XP box for internet connectivity for now untill I get a copy of fedora core 3.

up and running

Linux and GPRS is now a reality, thanks for all the help I got from the members of this forum.
 
Well as posted earlier downloaded and installed FC3 at work succesfully. Next challenge: My notebook.
 
Got FC3 running on my notebook without a hitch so far. I am fairly impressed with how easy it was to set up and install. Some points I found extremely interesting regarding the installation is:

1) It detected the Sync Station for my P910i as a device
2) It detected my bluetooth devices instantly
3) It detected my Vodafone 3G Card as an Opti

Going to follow the howto to try and configure my internet connectivity for it, but I am definitly sticking to using it for the moment. PS: This post done from Firefox :)

Woohoo :)

After a lot of hassle for a newbie user I got the card working. Followed a few different links and will post the whole process I followed once I have had a chance to document it for myself. Posting this from FC3 connecting with my datacard via 3G

Linux is here to stay for me as far as I am concerned. Thanks for the help Tazz_Tux
 
Anyone managed to get 3G and Fedora Core 3 working on a desktop? I've installed a PCI cardbus bridge (obtained from Vodashop), but when I plug in the 3G card ... nothing. I've tried manually modprobe-ing 'ds' and 'usbserial' but without success.
