"InfoWeek has posted an open-source OS comparison. Linux Shootout: 7 Desktop Distros Compared pits openSUSE, Ubuntu 8.4, PCLinuxOS, Mandriva Linux One, Fedora, SimplyMEPIS, and CentOS 5.1 against each other. And the winner is ... Ubuntu. Author Serdar Yegulalp writes: 'Ubuntu 8.4 remains one of the best desktop distributions for many good reasons: it works with almost any hardware you throw at it, and has tons of features for both existing Linux users and prospective converts from Windows.' He also gave openSUSE points for ease of use on the desktop, and Mandriva kudos for ease of administration."

I've never even heard of CentOS...

What happened to Gentoo?

CentOS is pretty good, but it is based on RedHat, which I personally hate.

Gentoo is a bit too "advanced" to be considered with the likes of Ubuntu and openSUSE.

Gentoo is a racist OS :D

The exact origin of the name Gentoo is unclear. It was used during the 18th century by both British and Portuguese (originating in the latter case from gentile) to refer to various ethnic groups, notably as a derogatory term for Hindus

Gentoo is for people who have 24 hours to do an install of their OS.

I can install Gentoo in just under an hour, but then again I am exceptionally leet :D

I thought the point of running Gentoo was to complile everything for you pc during the install to make it as tight and light as possible. How can you compile everything in under an hour?

Gentoo is an OS made exclusively for people who refer to themselves as "l33t". :D

Hence why I use it.

By having a beast of a machine :D

Nah, one can get the base system up and running (i.e. no KDE/GNOME) in under an hour. I built it on my firewall a few weeks back and had it running as a basic server in around an hour. Obviously recompiling the kernel and emerging various other packages will take longer, however getting to the basic system which can be booted into and used takes just under an hour if you know what you're doing :p

I'm tempted to try a race between Gentoo and Windows XP to see which one I can install faster. Maybe I will take turns installing each on a virtual machine and time it :D

Make the comparison fair... make sure the gentoo machine has all the matching packages as to what XP offers. IE, a browser, word, and all the other little widgits that come with XP.

It's named after the gentoo penguin - though where the penguin got its name, I don't know.

My last ubuntu install took < 10 minutes. How l33t is that? :D

Word doesn't come with windows. Apart from browsing there is not much you can do with a fresh windows install, except install all the other stuff you need. I've never used Gentoo (my time is precious :D) - but I'm pretty sure that a fresh gentoo install has far more than a fresh windows installation.

When I wrote word.. I had wordpad in my mind :> sry... should have completed the word :D

As a linux noob, I did a Gentoo install a couple of years ago... and it ONLY took... a whole weekend :D

lynx, vim, pine, irssi. Deal :D

My first Gentoo install (3 years ago) took me an entire week to get to where I wanted it to be, but that also had a lot to do with the fact that I was compiling KDE on an AMD Duron 800 with 256mb RAM (which, as you can imagine, took 3 days) :D

I think once one has gotten the hang of installing Gentoo (by doing it a few times), it gets a lot easier and a lot quicker as you know what you are doing and what you need.

This review is quite shocking terrible, I do not think this reviewer knows anything to be quite honest.

First thing is that he states Ubuntu 8.4, it is 8.04. Second thing if you look at the date of the article Ubuntu 8.04 is not considered a Beta release anymore. S
Third thing (which I noticed a reader pointed out), he was comparing chalk and cheese. In other words a fully released distro to a few others which are still beta.

Fourth thing since when is Mepis linux derived from Mandrivia? It is based on Debian and Ubuntu linux. No I am quite shocked at this review, it means as much as toilet paper.

the question would be how long it takes to compile a desktop environment. I suspect xfce and the relevant components should be relatively quick. or something like fluxbox.

Gentoo, "runs and hides away" I hate that OS. I some how always manage to f43s things up when I attempt to use it. Perhaps when I have an extra PC I'll try it again

I've decided that I will only run Gentoo when I get my Quad Core with 4GB RAM. I am not a huge fan of waiting for things to compile.

He did originally refer to Ubuntu as "8.04", however it really is semantics; Ubuntu's version-naming system doesn't require it to be "8.04 or else you are wrong", and I think calling it 8.4 when referencing it in an article that has already mentioned the full name and version isn't really a crime. 8.4 - 2008, 4th month, either way it doesn't make a huge difference.

However, stating Mepis is derived from Mandriva is just retarded. Mepis was created as an alternative to Mandriva (as well as SuSE and RedHat), the only similarity with the two distributions being the first letter of their names.
