Hey guys.

Im loving linux and figured a few cool things out already using virtual pc and so. I have an old laptop i want to use with transmission 24.7. Ubuntu seems laggish on it. Its a dell latitude d505. Debian doesnt want to install on it. Can someone give me a link to something like puppylinux that installs onto the hdd's and is small and fast and stable and secure? if thats all possible.

Thanks!

Any Linux with a lightweight window manager will do, even Ubuntu.
Configure it to only install Xorg and Fluxbox and leave all the bloat of Gnome.

Use fluxbox or openbox for your window manager and your PC will fly.

...or install win95?  :p :D

*runz*

Any version of Linux should run fine - as long as you use a lean and mean window manager and cut out eyecandy. ;)

+1 for Puppy Linux! But I dunno if there is a local download of it.

I can get you a CD if you are in Joburg.

Crunchbang also works for a light weight installation derived from ubuntu - runs blackbox afaik.

I wouldn't suggest fluxbox/openbox to a brand new user, its not that easy to configure while it is superfast.

My suggestion would be LXDE (which still uses openbox as the window manager), for a user thats used to windows this is probably the easiest DM (desktop manager) to get used to, and it looks sleek while you are at it. Later when you install it on a faster pc you can change the WM from openbox to emerald (compiz), still have the same desktop with nicer looking windows.

As for a distro with it on to start with:
PCLinuxOS : http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=70

My favourite still stays Archlinux, but I can not suggest it to a newish user.

+1 on Crunchbag

Yeah, Arch is great but not for new users.
