Linux help needed...

It says desktop effects could not be enabled could it be that i didnt install any drivers? iF so then how do i install them...

What hardware are you running? If you have a newish Nvidia card, it should be a breeze to load the drivers and get CF working.

Why not do a little googling for "compiz fusion ubuntu gutsy"? I was very happy with the great guides I found, making the process easy enough even for the non-technical. Once you have the gfx drivers installed and CF is working, you'll feel like a total expert!
:D

One little tip, which I do use, is to do a "sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/NNNNNN_xorg.conf" (replacing "NNNNNN" with the date), to keep a backup of my latest working graphics config.

This happened after I did a large upgrade and found that default settings were used and it seemed that my settings were totally buggered. I restored my xorg.conf and everything was perfect again

Hmmm... no idea how well Linux runs on NF 650i, I'll need to do some reading up on that. However, the new NV graphics drivers should be quite fine for the GTS.

Here are a few pointers:

  1. Don't be tempted to try using the Automatix or Envy scripts. They may work, but when you upgrade your OS, things tend to go south. Rather follow generic guidelines which don't break your setup and show you how things work
  2. http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy#NVidia_Driver, which explains the source requirement before installing the NV driver
  3. http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/nvidia, explains the basics for installing NV drivers using the GUI
  4. All you have to do is download the newest driver from nVIDIA’s website, press Ctrl+Alt+F1, stop Gnome/KDE/Xfce, install the driver, start Gnome/KDE/Xfce, and you’re done. ... Just watch the Update Manager and don’t install a kernel update.
  5. I followed this to install the NV drivers - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=57368, but it may contain way more details than one actually needs.
  6. http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy#Advanced_Desktop_Effects_.28Compiz_Fusion.29

Once you've got it going, there are lots of interesting settings to play with in the CF Control.

install emerald as your windows manager

sudo apt-get install emerald

then once its installed, config it (will be in your menus somewhere)

then in the run command alt+r type:

emerald --replace

if you are using kubuntu and wanna bounce back to the kde windows manger use

kwin --replace

not to sure what the one for gnome is. I hard to restart to get emerald to show.

My laptop display adapter is listed under blacklisted but I ran compiz fusion anyway - title bar on the windows doesn't show:(.

Saule, I had the same issue. It took quite a bit of googling, but there was a setting in the Compiz config files which fixed it. Sorry, this was many months ago and I'd have to go hunting at home for it
:)
