Hi There evryone
i just recently loaded Ubuntu Linux 5.10 on a old Dell PII laptop .
I would like to get my Novatel U740 Merlin HSDPA card to work on it.
Anyone outthere that is willing to help me on how to set it up? Please![]()
I checked out the howto guide from Tazz_tux , but I need guidance on how to use it, (shows you how dum I really am with Linux.)
Where to enter the commands, what scripts to run where and how, what needs to be installed etc.
I'll really appreciate it if there's anyone that will be willing help me through this.
Oh have I mentioned I'm a total dummie with Linux, but I'm willing to learn.
Thanks
Bauwermeister
Hi All
Thanks to Tazz_Tux's excellent work I got my Novatel U740 working under Linux as soon as I got it.
I've discovered that the Windows (vmconnect) utility uses the second port (which shows up under both windows and Linux) to communicate with the card while the first port is in use. This is important if you want to be able to query the signal level, send/receive SMS and so forth while you're connected.
I would like to be able to enable the second port under Linux, and I'm willing to write free tools to use it.
Unfortunately it seems that the second port does not accept AT commands by default. Novatel has some binary commands that can switch the port into AT command mode, and they provide an SDK which the vmconnect uses to do this, but they (Novatel) have ignored my enquiries to their sales department regarding this SDK. I have also logged a support request on their website, which they also completely ignored.
None of this is supprising though, as I later discovered that Novatel is known to be an "unfriendly vendor", which doesn't support their products: http://www.vendorwatch.org/index.php?title=Novatel
I have documented my (unsuccessful) effort to reverse-engineer the binary protocol here: http://wiki.clug.org.za/wiki/Novatel_Status_Port
Can Vodacom assist here? We pay good money for this service and Vodacom should have some connections with Novatel...
Any comment vodacom3g?
Regards,
Simeon.
