Tazz - Will these setups work using a Samsung D500 via USB too or are there special drivers necessary ?

Hey Debug,

Since I don't have one I can't try - but here are some guide lines:

Run tail -f /var/log/message and then connect the phone
If you find something like a port assignment, use that port for the dialing. If not, try and run lsusb -v and then modprobe usbserial vendor_id product_id

or

Paste the output of /var/log/messages when you insert the phone and the output of lsusb here and let's see what we can do :)

Everything starts up fine - blue light , authenticated, so I don't know what's the problem.
I went through this thread but could not find my problem.

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Hi Tuzz_Tux,

Sorry memory lapse , I have to manually put in the DNS in /etc/resolv.conf if I have
Auto DNS = 0 in wvdial. :D

Well anycase I did it and still not working. As I said not able to ssh and firewall stopped as well.

Thanks

Ok that is wierd - and in the other OS ? if it doesn't work there - give Vodacom3G a PM with the details as per the sticky :)

Force 3G

How do I switch from 3g to gprs and vice versa i.e force 3g or gprs?

Using a huawei card on Ubuntu 6.06

Currently the card runs only in gprs mode yet when I use it under XP I can access 3g?

Hey Docusource,

If you are using my config, simply insert the words 2gonly or 3gonly on the dial command. If not, here is the commands:

Code:
2gonly = AT+COPS=0,0,"Vodacom-SA",0
3gonly = AT+COPS=0,0,"Vodacom-SA",2

I personally dont believe in the 3G prefered/GPRS prefered states, but if you want I can figure out what they are.

Anyone willing to help Linux Dummie

Hi There evryone

i just recently loaded Ubuntu Linux 5.10 on a old Dell PII laptop .
I would like to get my Novatel U740 Merlin HSDPA card to work on it.

Anyone outthere that is willing to help me on how to set it up? Please :)

I checked out the howto guide from Tazz_tux , but I need guidance on how to use it :o , (shows you how dum I really am with Linux.)
Where to enter the commands, what scripts to run where and how, what needs to be installed etc.

I'll really appreciate it if there's anyone that will be willing help me through this.
Oh have I mentioned I'm a total dummie with Linux :) , but I'm willing to learn.
Thanks
Bauwermeister

Hey Bauwermeister,

I need you to at least start the process - most of the commands I gave on the thread is run from within the command prompt. I don't have step-by-step instructions on how to do this for Ubuntu, so I can only give you a guide.

Novatel U740 Status port

Hi All

Thanks to Tazz_Tux's excellent work I got my Novatel U740 working under Linux as soon as I got it.

I've discovered that the Windows (vmconnect) utility uses the second port (which shows up under both windows and Linux) to communicate with the card while the first port is in use. This is important if you want to be able to query the signal level, send/receive SMS and so forth while you're connected.

I would like to be able to enable the second port under Linux, and I'm willing to write free tools to use it.

Unfortunately it seems that the second port does not accept AT commands by default. Novatel has some binary commands that can switch the port into AT command mode, and they provide an SDK which the vmconnect uses to do this, but they (Novatel) have ignored my enquiries to their sales department regarding this SDK. I have also logged a support request on their website, which they also completely ignored.

None of this is supprising though, as I later discovered that Novatel is known to be an "unfriendly vendor", which doesn't support their products: http://www.vendorwatch.org/index.php?title=Novatel

I have documented my (unsuccessful) effort to reverse-engineer the binary protocol here: http://wiki.clug.org.za/wiki/Novatel_Status_Port

Can Vodacom assist here? We pay good money for this service and Vodacom should have some connections with Novatel...

Any comment vodacom3g?

Regards,
Simeon.

Hey Simeon,

Nice work on the binary protocol there ! I have been working on a linux equal of vmc, but due to time have had to place it on hold. My idea is that the codes that you need to send to the card, be send using a program like that rather than a terminal program, most of them add codes to the data that you want to send or messes something up :)

I will keep you in mind when I have a gap to return to coding the VMC for Linux.
