Hey Peter,

In your /etc/ppp/options add the following line:

usepeerdns

Also check that there is no "nopeerdns" line :)

Laterz !

Tazz_Tux,

first of all thank you, that did get me quit e bit further:

linux-89sr:/etc # wvdial hsdpa

--> Connected... Press Ctrl-C to disconnect

the pcmai card also got bright blue, but still i can not get connected to the internet with my little firefox browser and had to stop the UMTS service before beeing able using my ethernet/dsl routing.

i checked for /dev/ttyUSB0 and could not found that entry in /dev, and tried to create with MAKEDEV, but that command is not recognized by my system (suse 10.1)

it feels like i am almost there, but i still need a little more help before i can enter the UMTS heaven :)

hi Tazz_Tux,

thank you again :) i am connected now, but i have a few questions.

1) My little firefox using this connection tends to switch in offline mode from time to time when using Konqueror i stay connected, i have not the slightest glue why, can anyone help here?

2) Why do i need to run /etc/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1410 product=0x1400, before using /etc/wvdial hsdpa ?

3) My speed is very slow indicated with 6-20 KB / s in Konqueror at usual browsing and 114 KB / s using speed test software how to improve?

4) When trying to use /etc/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1410 product=0x1400, or /etc/wvdial hsdpa as normal user i get the system message file not found, how can i modify that i do not need to use this service as root?

:) i still have not reached UMTS heaven, it rather feels like the first flights of the wright brothers, someone please help...

Hey Peter,

Ok - I will try and help as much as I can. Since I only know South African networks I might not be correct on some things.

1) Upgrade your firefox ? I use it all the time and havn't seen this problem

2) The standard USBSerial driver doesn't "accept" that card normally, so we force it :) You can add it into /etc/modules or something like that. If I have a gap I will add this to the howto

3) Ok - let me get this right - on a speed test, you get full speed, but on browsing you dont ? If I got that right, give the customer care line a call and start asking questions ! Bear in mind that HSDPA has a ramp up time - start a download (say 3-5 meg file) and see how the speed climbs

4) As far as I know, you can't. Both of them change the system, the first, inserts a module into the kernel, but you can do that at system startuop (/etc/init.d/local.start in the newer distros) since once a module is loaded, it's loaded. The second commands brings up a network link, for which you need root/superuser access. There is ways around that, but I don't bother with them. By the time I sit down to look at them, something else has caught my eye :D

Vodacom, HSDPA - disconnect?!

Please ignore this post, the sim was still expecting a pin (idiot me!)

hey Tazz_Tux,

thanks again for helping me :), at least the card is working now and i begin to adapt to it, because something else has caught my eye....

have a nice time in South Africa

Peter

Did you compile the driver ?

Laterz !

I tried, but ubuntu doesnt know "make" command. i did compile on suse, but i prefer ubuntu, so if i'm going to get this to work, I'd like to do it on ubuntu. do you think that this should all work as per your howto even though the card is in a pcmcia to pci bridge on my desktop pc?

Tazz:

I'm going to grab the logs tonight when i get home. will post tonight. then you can have a look at whats going on.

Thanks :)

Tazz:

Sorry, I might be jumping the gun here, but I have a slightly unrelated question. Once you've helped me get connected and I'm more familiar with how the whole system works, is there a way to make a "batch file" on the desktop that will connect the card and run some kind of monitoring software? And while we're at it, isnt there a gui version of wvdial (or something similar) that i could use to control the connection?

Much appreciated. :)

Howzit,

Install the following packages:

gcc
kernel-devel
automake
autoconf

And try again :)

We can - the script will still need your root password - there is ways around it with sudo, but I have no luck using it :p

As for the GUI - normally distro have gui's build around the network and ppp stuff, so have a look there. As for the monitoring, what are you looking for exactly ?

Firstly, there is no root pwd in ubuntu. i can "sudo -i" in terminal then all commands are issued "as if" you were root, buy you cant actually login as root.... wonder why they did that....

Monitoring: like tx/rx lights, usage, etc... :o

eeeerrrrrr - Ok - you learn something new everyday :)

usage - look at the front of this post, there is a script to do it. As for the lights, like I said, normally the distros run gnome in which case use gnome-network-monitor (name could be wrong) or gkrellm :)

That's one of the things I most dislike about Ubuntu... (<== hee, hee lame excuse to use the new smiley)

You can enable the root user though, if you want to ;)
Just do:
sudu passwd root
You'll be prompted for a password ... once you've entered it the root account is back in action ;)

You can even disable it again afterwards if you decide... just do:
sudu passwd -l root

Yes - I saw on the post ;)

ls /dev/ | grep noz is what you looking for - no need for the modprobe command

Laterz !

I'm just following your howto... i don't know where the card is located on the system. when i eject or insert the card, it just says "card ejected" or "card inserted" i need to find out where the device is so that i can set wvdial to dial out on the device...

I hope I'm going in the right direction with this.

thx.
