Have you disabled the PIN on the SIM ? If so, make sure you get two "quick" blinks on the card - I hope the Quad is the same as the other card :)

I haven't disabled the PIN on the SIM and the provider has an explanation of the diffierent blinks for that specific card. Therefor I know that it accepts the PIN, that there is a 3G network present, but it's not connected to the network.

Still, though, wvdial tries to get pppd running, but it (pppd) only exits with code 10, meaning that pppd didn't manage to create a connection.

Hey Lacraia,

This is still the Option Quad card right ? If so, a friend is getting will. I will update the FAQ as needed and see how to solve your problem.

Hi Tazz_Tux,

thanks for your reply. When I insert the card I doesn't see anything in dmesg, but on udevmonitor i see the following:

UEVENT[1132016510] add@/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1e.0/0000:02:00.0/0000:03:00.0
UEVENT[1132016510] add@/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1e.0/0000:02:00.0/0000:03:00.1
UDEV [1132016510] add@/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1e.0/0000:02:00.0/0000:03:00.1
UDEV [1132016510] add@/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1e.0/0000:02:00.0/0000:03:00.0

The usbserial module is loaded. When I execute pcmciautils info I see nothing, only cat /sys/class/pcmcia_socket/pcmcia_socket0/card_type gave me '32-bit'.

Because I am running kernel 2.6.14 I have to use pcmciautils and unmerge pcmcia-cs and therefore there is no /etc/init.d/pcmcia start as mentioned in your howto. But I think that should not matter.

Would be great, if you can give me some hints where to look or what to do to get my card running.

Christian

Finally I got it to work.
For whatever reasons I didn't have OHCI compiled :-)
Another difference is that my Option card has another product ID. My is 0x6300
Because I didn't find the vendor and product ID in dmesg, I used the following command:

cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

An alternative data usage approach

Hi there,

I use SUSE Linux 9.2 on my laptop with the Novatel card.

When I was on Telkom's SurfmorePlus package, I wrote a python script to keep track of my dial-up time. This was based on a system command called accounting. I wrapped it in a python script to simplify usage since Telkom's billing month did not coincide with the calendar month.

Since Vodacom accounts for usage from the beginning of each month, I now use the command directly whenever I want to check up on my data usage. The command (with parameters) and the output (the last column is relevant) are shown below.
Code:
galdor@numenor:~> accounting --this-month -p
Provider Number Duration RX TX RX + TX
-------------------- ------ ------------ ------- ------- -------
Vodacom 31 24:48:22 94.3 MB 10.6 MB 104 MB

This seems to track my actual billed usage quite closely with the following caveats:
  1. Any usage through MSWindows is obviously not included. I only use MS when investigating connection problems so this minor discrepancy is OK for me.
  2. The data is extracted from logs so the usage of any current connection is not included. If it has been a heavy session you can just disconnect before checking your usage. But I have not gotten close enough to my limit to feel the need for this yet.

Check out the man page for further details e.g. to get today's usage. For other newbies like me, this means to enter the following:
Code:
galdor@numenor:~> man accounting

The command has a typical Unix-flavour so I suspect it is fairly standard - it would be interesting to know if non-SUSE distributions also have it.

I have installed ubuntu breezy on two laptops, the one is running Tazz_tux's WVdial scripts through an option card for internet connectivity. I also have a usb bluetooth dongle on each laptop and would like to share the internet connection to the other laptop. I have bluetooth kbtserialchat and kbtobexclient on both machines, which comes standard with the distro. Does anyone know how to do this?

This looks really cool, tried it on Ubuntu, doesn't have this app, so I looked through the Ubuntu repositories but cannot find this app. :(

A few easy questions from a newbie??

Hi all, I just recently got myself a SE V600 handset and am really eager to use its built in modem as a modem for Ubuntu at home but have a few questions:

1. Is it possible in Linux?

2. Can I follow this howto?

3. I have tried using the cellphone as a modem in WinXP but got a "error 734"
What is this error and how can I resolve it?

Sorry for the newbie questions, but I have serched the net for a while and can't get any answers for these simple questions.

Cheers

Poor 3G signal under Suse 9.3

Hi Tazz_Tux and others for all your useful posts.

I have a Novatel U630 card running under Suse9.3. My connection speed is quite eratic. I have tried everything which I found on this forum with limited success. Any suggestions? If I boot into my windoze box I get a much better signal although I'm not moving?

Help...please!

Hey FreeMan,

Did you have more success with the setserial command ?

The reason for this command is that sometimes linux defaults the serial port to a slower "rate" to free up CPU cycles - but these days you hvae PLENTY spare so just run that command.

I will look into a way to run this command on insert of the card.

Laterz !!!

setserial command

Hey TT,

I have mixed joy with the setserial command. Sometimes when I restart my GUI the command seems to stick and othertime not...so I just run it everytime before connecting. But I must say that the best speed that I have had so far on my Linux box is 38kb/s....whereas on my windoze box I get 384kb/s (or as close to that as possible)...

Any help would be welcome....

PS: on a AT+CSQ I get the same signal strength as on my windoze mashine...so I guess it must be something with the Linux box?

Hey FreeMan.

You can run the setserial command at anytime, even while downloading etc. (it's not windows after all :D )

Please post the output of "setserial -a /dev/ttyS0" before and after running the command to set the speed - if you can, right after a reboot.

As for the speed, was that 38kbits/sec or 38kbytes ? the 38kbytes is about right and you can run something like "iptraf -d ppp0" to display the kbits/sec.

Laterz !!!

EDIT: You can also run the setserial command while downloading and monitoring via iptraf - get the best one for your system :)

Tazz_Tux

After reboot setserial -a /dev/ttyS1 gives me:

/dev/ttyS1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 5
Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
closing_wait: 3000
Flags: spd_normal skip_test

When I just remove and insert the card again I also get the message above.

setserial -a /dev/ttyS1 gives the following output (after running the command: setserial -a /dev/ttyS1 low_latency spd_warp):

linux:~ # setserial -a /dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS1, Line 1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 5
Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0
closing_wait: 3000
Flags: spd_warp skip_test low_latency

Regarding the speed, I'm using Kinternet and the Data Rate indicator gives me e.g. 32.0kB/s on the left and at the top if fluctuates showing e.g. 40 B/s rx 128 B/s tx. So I guess we are most probably talking about 34 Kbytes/s?

iptraf tells me that that ppp0 is not active although I am connected...?

Hello thr,

Does anyone know how to run GlobeTrotter Option EDGE datacard in Linux especially in Fedora Core?

If anyone knows can you please give me step by step procedure or atleast any link where the information is available.

I tried to run Option Edge card according to the steps given below. But those steps are for Option GPRS card.
http://www.pharscape.org/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=29

Moreover when I am trying to run cardmgr I am not getting any beeps. Its is giving error as
open_sock(Socket 1) failed: Bad file descriptor
If I run cardmgr after killing it gives me error that Device is busy.

I am not getting whats the problem?
How does one verify that cardmgr has recognized the card?

Thanks for any help.

Regards,
Kavita

I've got the same problem as Lacraia, Tazz, where pppd exits with code 10, did you find out what might cause this?

Novatel speed problem solved

Hi Tazz and others,

I solved my problem. I basically ditched Suse 9.3 and went over to Fedora Core 4. I got the card flying in less than 2 minutes. I used a simple modem setup on /dev/ttyS1.

Thanks for the help!
fm
PS: iptraf now also works 100%
