hehehe - I didn't want to sound rude on the AT commands thing, but it's easier that way :)

BTW as a personal "warning" check the EULA of any software before you rev. engineer it - for some it's against the EULA :(

BTW - What bug you talking about ? And as for the configs, when I sit down and spend some time on the app I wrote that will be all gone, since it will emulate VMC on Linux....:)

Ok ... I won't ask such questions, I was actually thinking of VMWaring win xp and reverse engineering the vodacom dashboard to get the commands ... thank g0d I don't have to do it now ;)

The AT commands arn't a problem, the distribution we design uses etcnet which supports basically anything .... and ... I use it on my lappy. BTW, setting all this up actually prompted the rise of a bug which we submitted a patch for, so I'm very happy We should have a site with all the config files on for all the distro's .... if you want I can targz the etcnet config and you can post it somewhere?

Not reverse engineering the software in the strictest sense ... more like emulating hardware and hardware responses, or .... logging all access to a serial device, I don't see how that could violate any EULA.

There is a bug in etcnet with regards to profiles. Only usefull to those who use profiles and want to setup a datacard under a provile and have it activate by using the switchto command.

Nice one WildPikachu! ...
you know I was pretty certian that I read somewhere that the linksys 3g router's software was GPL'd... I just couldn't find it..

Only sucky part is the tarball is like 170 MB odd download :(

Internet connection sharing Linux - Windows

Hey Tazz.

I've really been getting used to Ubuntu over the last week or so, and I'm finding it great. :p

The situation as it stands now is this: Our business runs on a Windows accounting package on one of the other machines on the network. There are two desktops (wired to a switch) and two laptops (wireless to an access point on the switch). Previously, when all machines were XP, we ran internet connection sharing and everyone had access to the internet. I want to be able to share the connection with Ubuntu, which will hold the connection. I believe the switch (actually a dsl router) is running a dhcp server and dishing out IP's to the network.

This may be more of a network-related question, but can you help?

Sure can - I am sure I covered this in another thread. I will update the main one with connection sharing :)

ok i read the howto (connection sharing). when i set this up, is there anything i have to do to the windows machines, or, when set to automatically detect settings, will they do just that?

Howzit,

Make their default gateway the IP of the Linux box on eth0 and set the DNS Servers etc :)

That should be it

I am gonna get flamed for this one but here goes:

The beauty of Opensource.....aaaaaahhhhhhhhh

:D
Eh? What a funny thing to say... why would anyone flame you for saying that?

:D

Btw.. I seem to remember an issue with the Novatel cards being unable to go faster than around 500k somewhere in this thread..
I've not really been able to test it properly myself seeing as I'm infrequently within 3G/HSDPA range... but anyway perhaps the router source code will help sort this problem out.. ? (Assuming the problem still exists)

EDIT: Ah, found the original post here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=523365&postcount=242
Also found one of my own earlier posts... seems I did actually test it some time ago... (and was unable to achieve HSDPA speeds..)

Hey Tazz,

This is what I get:

Code:
root@Sevenworth:~# iptables -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
iptables: No chain/target/match by that name

Any ideas?

LOL - you will be surprised how many non Linux people read this thread and some and not really Linux/Opensource supporters - but that is another story :)

As for the Novatels etc. the only speed issue I remember was with the serial port driver - not the usb serial driver. It didn't init'ed the port correctly and if you look at the start of the thread you will see a command to fix that.

Other than that - I love your posts....you almost always answer yourself !!!

Laterz !

Hey sevenworth,

Try:

Code:
iptables -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQ

:)

If not, run this

Code:
iptables-save
and post the output (you can blank out any IPs)

hmm... yea, I suppose so... they've not flamed you yet anyway.. :D

.. oh well.. I'll test it again when I'm back in HSDPA zone.. which should hopefully be next week some time when I'm in Cape Town...

Other than that - I love your posts....you almost always answer yourself !!!
Heh.. yea I guess I am rather good at that.. I'm glad they at least provide some entertainment :o ... hopefully they might also occaisonally be of some use :D

Hey tux,

Ok ... using the 3rd serial port of the Huawei card you can get status updates regarding the connection.

I see 4 updates sent...

^RSSI:n <= appears to be the receive signal strength, what n means i'm not sure
^DSFLOWRPT:n,n,n,n,n,n,n <= no clue what this is
^BOOT:n,n,n,n,n <= no clue what this is
^MODE:n,n <= here i get 5,4 or 5,5 ..... the light changes from blue to bluegreen respectively. This may be the technology being used indicator?

The commands... both return errors.
GPRS Only - AT^SYSCFG=13,1,3FFFFFFF,2,4
3G Only - AT^SYSCFG=14,1,3FFFFFFF,2,4

I'm going to hack around with the Linksys code and see what the exact command is it issues to the card to change modes.
