Linux made easy with Mandriva 2010.2

We've heard it all before "xxx makes Linux easy". Easy for whom? Definitely not for the "guy on the street" or your average (or even above average) PC user. Easy compared to what? Definitely not compared to Windows or OS.

What's so hard about it?

I thought Mandriva is gonna be shut down?

This comes as a surprise.

Yawn!!!!!!!!!!

If you cant use Ubuntu then you must be a monkey that had the unfortunate experience of a lobotomy.

Not so difficult !

You make feel sooo good - I am, in my opinion, just a run of the mill computer user.

I really appreciate linux - and thank all those geeks out there who put it together.

corel linux was suppose to be the second coming....

Agree, if it's not as easy as Windows and if it's not friendly to gaming then I won't required it as I don't want the hassle of not knowing what to do next when there is a problem or I can't install a game.

Well if it's that easy then why isn't it taking the corporate or home world by storm but instead it still way of for the home user like me who wants something that is easy to use and understand. Until then I will leave linux to the it monkeys to play with their toy/peanut.

What's up with this 2010.2 release? I was expecting a brand new 2011.0 release (as they usually do early each year).

Mandriva was recently forked into Mageia because "the future of the Mandriva Linux distribution is unclear". 2010.2 may just be a half-baked attempt to buy time until they decide to kill or keep it.

Hi Ricardo,

Ockie (ocleroux) gets a bit emotional & frustrated sometimes, but he is a good kid, so dont take it personally. :p

Linux has changed a lot over the past few years & I can definitely recommend Ubuntu as a replacement for your Windows desktop/laptop.

Not so geeky anymore and very easy & powerful to use.

Give it another try & you might be pleasantly surprised. ;)

We all have our favourites, but you should definitely try Mandriva as well!
It's widely considered one of the easiest distro's, if not THE easiest.

Ubuntu's support & community is very good for newbies & switchers IMHO, but Im sure Mandriva will be good as well.

This looks great and keen to give it a try, especially Instant On as a dual boot option. Being new to Linux though can someone please point out the difference between the downloads i.e One 2010.2 and Free 2010.2? Not sure which one to download.

Use "One 2010.2".
The "free" version is for hard core open-source fanatics that doesn't like proprietary code in their OS.

The One edition is an installable live CD integrating the latest proprietary drivers, available free of charge. Six different versions of the One edition are available: two for GNOME and four for KDE, each with a different set of supported languages.
Starting from Mandriva 2010 Spring Update, now you are able to install Mandriva One directly from the boot menu, choosing the option 'Install to Hard Disk', no need to run into a live session if you want so. This new feature allows One installs on 128MB systems, even if 256MB are recommended to achieve 10 times faster installs.

The Free edition is a pure free / open source software edition, without any of the non-free packages bundled with the other editions, available as a free download.
For more information on the various editions, see Choosing the right edition.

One only comes in 32-bit with iso images for Gnome & KDE in the region of 630MB-680MB
Free comes in both 32-bit & 64-bit iso images of 3.8GB which probably contains additional software but excludes proprietary stuff like drivers, codecs, flash etc.

Running InstantOn and trying to install Teamviewer for Linux. When I run the setup file I get the following message:

You are attempting to run a command which requires administrative privileges, but more information is needed in order to do so. Authenticating as "root."

And then asks for a password.

What must I do to get round this?

I suspect that somewhere during setup/install you were prompted for a root password? Sorry, have not used mandriva, alternatively try your own password.
