Hi guys, i am a newbie to Linux and trying different distros

I am currently testing and installed Linux Mint 8, need help plz

After installation of Mint, I hve sound, after I connect to the internet via my 3g broadband usb modem, my sound doesn't play - strange hey.

Can anyone plz tell me whatz the matter and how do i resolve.

THx

I would suggest searching in their forums, for issues, along with the hardware of your computer. Hardware specs can be gotten with lspci (type it in a terminal)

Thx for response

Vodafone USB Stick K3565-Z - i though it was the stick, i tried an option stick as well, still the same, after an internet connection is made, i reboot and bang, sound disappears

What hardware are you using. Be precise & thorough in your feedback.

lspci -v might help as well.

mmm really stupid question. I enjoyed using Mint the last time I used it. But I really do like the Ubunut panel more. The thing at the top. Is there anyway to migrate that to Mint?

I'm pretty sure it's possible but dunno how. Have you tried the Mint forums?

So what you use ponder? Gentoo or something similar to make us poor noobs feel worthless compared to you? hahaha.

Seriously though...thanks ponder. I know you would have helped or given a answer if you could. Busy downloading Mint 9 32bit for my moms laptop and 64 bit for my laptop. :-)

You can follow the these steps to get gnome main menu back:
Right click on the menu button within the panel and choose “Remove from Panel”.
Then right click on an empty part of the Panel and choose “Add to Panel”.
Then select “Main Menu” if you want a simple Gnome Menu, “Menu Bar” if you want
the default Gnome Menu or “mintMenu” if you change your mind and actually want to
use the Linux Mint menu.
Taken from Official User Guide Linux Mint 9 “Isadora” which you can download here: http://mirror.is.co.za/mirror/linuxmint.com/stable/9/user-guide/

Then you will just have to make a panel at the top and move the main menu to the top. And then you will have to do a few more final adjustments, but it should be simple, I think.
Hope this helps

Wow..thanks Centaur. I downloaded Linux Mint yesterday. and popped it into my old laptop that I want to give to my mom. Unlike the previous times, when loading Ubuntu or Mint, my wifi no longer seems to work out of the box. It would always pick up the wifi regardless of the fact that i have not yet downloaded the propriety drivers. Now nothing. Guess I will be switching it back to Ubuntu again.

You can maybe try this guide: http://www.bloggersbase.com/computers/fix-wi-fi-in-linux-mint/ I don't know if it will have an effect. However, now with some more investigating, it looks like it is one of those problems that came with Ubuntu. So I don't think it will work on the new Ubuntu also.
It would really help if you can specify the name of the wifi device inside the laptop.

Not 100% sure, but Ubuntu have always downloaded the "Broadcom" propriety driver for it, and it worked 100% It is just weird, cause my wifi have always worked straight as soon as the install was finished. My own fault though I guess. I should have checked it first while running the live CD.

If you have an internal card post the output of lspci -v or if it's usb lsusb -v here. We only need the parts wrt 'broadcom'.

I assume you are using version 9?
If it does not work out of the box on the latest mint I doubt it does on the latest ubuntu.

Ja...it was working cool with Ubuntu Karmic. The weird thing is that my Compaq lapie uses a Atheros card, and that worked straight out of the box with Ubuntu Lynx. Strange. will post the results tonight when home. Ponder, do I just copy and paste that into terminal?
