Linux Mint 8

@ ponder

Here is the output that you asked me for. I have no idea what it means...but I did notice it has a "access denied" message in there. You think that could be causing the problem???

10:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 1364
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
Memory at f0000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: b43-pci-bridge
Kernel modules: ssb

I thought i was going to be clever and use my E220 modem to just download the Broadcom driver it wants...but it also does not recognise my e220 modem out of the box like it used to and it is the same on my Compaq with Ubuntu Lucid. I had to install Betavine VMC before it would recognize my modem. But to install the Betavine package you need to be connected already so it can download dependancies. *sigh* Which came first...the chicken or the egg stuff lol

Hope you Linux boffs can tell me what to do.

EDIT: Decided to just out of interest run Linux Mint 9 on my Compaq with the LiveCD and see what it does. WiFi works straight away with no downloading of drivers. Interesting hey. Here is the output for my Compaq:

07:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 137b
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 23
Memory at c2000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: ath5k
Kernel modules: ath5k

Went to hardware drivers, clicked on "activate"....it then came up with the message that it failed to download blah blah blah from httpp thingy magiggy! I then copied that...saved it to a doc...saved doc to flash drive....opened the linky on my other laptop that does have interwebs...opened the linky and download the driver. Saved driver (.deb file) to flash....saved it on the other laptop and double clicked and tada!!!!! WIFI works and its picking up the houses WiFi network!

Who said gay guys cant work Linux.....pfffft!!! :-)

PS: Thanks Ponder. You inspired me! :-)

See, it's not as complicated as most people make it out to be :D

shhhh dammit. I want people to think I am a absolute Linux guru genius! lol

I think I might switch my own lappie over to Mint also now....maybe this weekend. That boot up screen of Ubuntu Lynx is enough to make me get sick! Who ever slapped that ugly thing together should be stripped of his Canonicle credentials and banned to the wastelands of Siberia! lol

While you are at it get the E220 working on the "lizette" laptop so that if you have future wireless issues you can just plug the E220 in for emergency network connectivity.

Don't you have a wired connection though?

Eeak. How you know what that lappie is called? Oh wait I see now. Thats what happens when you copy & paste hey lol haha.

Thats a very good idea about the E220 modem. Will install the Betavine Vodafone package to get it working. Strange...with the previous versions of Ubuntu and Mint, you could just plug it in and wham bam, it would pop op with a dialog box asking you to set up your 3G. Now, when you plug in your modem, NOTHING...only once you have installed the Betavine Vodafone package does it recognize the modem.

I dont have a wired connection, the house where I stay has a wifi router stashed away in the ceiling somewhere! Have you not seen the movie "The Grudge"? No way in hell im climbing in there!!!! lol

Google a bit, you should be able to get it working via Network Manager. Betavine will make a good backup.

*rubs oil lamp* Calling Ponder the linux Genie!!!!!

I have a problem. On my newly installed Linux Mint, there is now a lot of updates it wants to download, but unlike the update manager in Ubuntu...it does not tell you how many megs it will eat up. Do you guys know how to get this info? I was thinking maybe if you do it in terminal...(terminal will normally say ....megs to be downloaded ... do you want to continue) but I dont know the commands for terminal.

Can you tell me what I must copy and paste in there ??? hehe

Don't we all?

Try:
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

233 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.
Need to get 222MB of archives.
After this operation, 10.8MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]?

My Linux HERO!!!! Thanks a mill Ponder :D

Now my second question...can I come visit you and use your uncapped adsl to do my updates? :D:D:p
