Linux Mint Cinnamon – A good alternative

Ill check it tonight...hope there are screenshots. I have adapted very nicely to how Mint implemented Gnome Shell in Mint 12 though...so doubt if I will actually download it.
 
Also running Mint 12 on a HTPC and getting quite used to it.
I doubt I will have more than 1 Windows machine in the future.
 
Oh man I am loving this.

It brings what I loved about Gnome 3's hot corners into what I loved about Windows

Edit: Wait a minute... Is this not like Windows XP use to be, just refined with added features?

Firstly, their website says 1.4 is released ... a little slow? :p

Secondly, is this a linux distro or an add-on to an existing linux, I'm confused...

And how does Mint compare to Ubuntu, what are the differences ... I might just try this out once someone replies, because I don't really like either of the Ubuntu UI's.

Its an add-on, one that you can install onto Ubuntu 11.10/12.04 Just do the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

But I would advice using normal Mint 12 and install Cinnamon after that. Mint is based on Ubuntu and can use most if not all the applications that are compiled for Ubuntu.

When you log out and select Cinnamon at the login screen you will get the new interface.

Edit: Reason why I say install Mint is because I dont know if you get all the panels when you install it on Ubuntu, will check later to confirm, Just busy compiling something that will take a while so can not boot into Ubuntu.

I run Linux using VirtualBox, so it's easy to give it a shot :)

Does Mint support Apache / SQL as easy as Ubuntu does?

Ok the 12.04 build still not complete so don't try it on Ubuntu 12.04. Might be fixed later on as there where no packages in the repo for 64 bit, and some for 32 bit.(To be expected since 12.04 is not on stable yet) 11.10 works no problem and install without hassles, well none that I could see. I would still use this on Mint as I prefer Mint themes and so on.

As for your Apache question, yep should work just fine but I would stick to a Server destro like Ubuntu server or such, rather than a desktop one for LAMP testing (I guess thats what you using it for?) to make sure you dont have issues when you deploy.

Just hope systemd wont be required in the future, otherwise Cinnamon would be quite usefull on *BSD systems (provided source is available).
 
Got some nice Cinnamon themes that I downloaded and put in the /usr/share/themes/ folder, but for some reason it's not showing up in the themes option under Gnome-tweak :mad:

1st, if you check the page its says
"To install a theme: Download it and decompress it in ~/.themes (or /usr/share/themes to install it system-wide)."

2nd, you can select them in the Panel Settings tab as demo'ed Here. (hope it makes sense as I did a quick upload)
