Linux mint user

So my gf`s windows installation finally gave up. Like all Windows systems... this one over the years degraded... and took bits of the hard disk with it.

I did try a complete format and reinstall.. but the issues with Windows just kept annoying the heck outta both of us.

So I have given her Mint Linux and boy is she happy. She is not a power user at all... and just works with office documents and the web .. so she is very happy with her install.

I have converted another one. *small evil laugh*

Ill give Linux mint... a 7.5/10

Yeah totally. Its weird to see Linux being used to find instructions on how to make egg and oil mixtures for painting:confused:

I didnt know linux browsers could go anywhere but to myadsl and slashdot... theres more of the Internet? hehe jk

Main edition is a live cd, 664mb. There's also a Universal edition as a Live DVD.

I haven't tried Felicia, the just-released release. But I've been using mint since Celena (then Daryna and Elyssa) - it's very nice. Mostly ubuntu compatible, no local downloads (afaik) but you can use the loal ubuntu repos for updates.

Felicia is just a few days/weeks old - the other editions (KDE/xfce etc) are community projects which generally trail the official releases by a little way.
 
I have a Mint iso on my pc, should give it a go sometime...
 
If Mint is just Ubuntu with a tweaked Gnome interface, then what do the KDE/xfce versions have that Kubuntu, Xubuntu etc don't?

Mint is a little more than Ubuntu with a tweaked interface. (Not on Mint atm but off the top of my head) It's got software tools such as MintMenu, MintWifi, MintInstall, MintDesktop and some others. I think it's a little more newb-friendly than even ubuntu.
 
It's the same thing as Ubuntu IMO. " MintMenu, MintWifi, MintInstall, MintDesktop" do not make it a completely new distro. BTW Mint comes with the prop software preinstalled, so there is a small difference. Under the hood, it's all Ubuntu.

Also, note Ubuntu uses Gnome as a DE, Mint just removes the top bar and puts in a slab for the "start" menu.

But, Mint seems to run a bit faster than ubuntu native..so there must be some serious tweaking to the kernel..mmm.
