1. What is the best program to use to run Linux inside windows xp?

2. Can I install Ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10 on a flash drive and boot from there?

3. How do I do number 2?

Thanx. I downloaded Virtual Box yesterday. When I try to install it it says it is not a valid windows32 application. (or something like that anyway)

Have you checked whether the download is corrupted or not? Or that your system is clean from viruses etc?

Install Ubuntu as normal, but have your flash drive plugged in when you do it. When you're asked about partitions, you can make your / mount on the flash drive. Hopefully you have lots of RAM, so you can then remove the swap partition that it'll try to install for you. Then continue the installation as normal.

To boot the installation off the flash, you need to change your boot order when you turn your computer on. Typically you just need to press a button and choose "boot from USB drive".

I second Wubi. use a live Ubuntu (Desktop version) CD when you are logged into XP; a wizard will popup--follow the instructions. In 20 mins or so you will have a Ubuntu in XP running peacefully.

I'm a big virtualbox fan, but wubi makes things even easier if it's ubuntu you want to run inside windows.

Thanx. I'm downloading wubi now. Last time when I installed Linus I partitioned my drive and yep lost all my data. So I want to play it safe this time.

I'm gonna get shouted at but Virtual PC (and virtual server if you just want a service running) works nicely as well if you want to run Linux in a vm. *runz*

Wubi is a windows executable (wubi.exe I think?) that comes packaged on the live Ubuntu CD Desktop version (not the alternate). Downloading wubi separately will not help.

PS: Always backup data before you play with the hard drive--you can never be too sure!

I had the exact same problem about 2 weeks ago after downloading VB and I tried downloading it twice. What gives?

Downloaded again same problem. Found a program that allows me to install Linux onto my flasah drive.

VPC doesn't play nicely with the new Linux distros.

@ponder & chuck1
I downloaded VBox just this monday and it's working fine, maybe try again.

I just downloaded it now again and it works thanks.

Wonder what was the issue the previous two times I wasted 140MB of bandwidth...

I haven't had any issues with Mandriva 2009 or 2010 on it. Dunno about ubunpoo.

Not sure what, think it's graphics related. openSuse 10.1 worked on VPC but 11.0 doesn't. Same thing with Ubuntu, 9.10 wouldn't install at all and 8.10 only after using some kernel overrides.

Edit: just checked now, I have openSuse 11.0 64bit so probably mistaken about that.
