Hi all.

I have a week ago formated my pc and installed Ubuntu 12.10. It was weird.
However, after only using ubuntu and learning ways to do things I used to do in windows I actually came to the conclusion that WINDOWS IS FAARKING STUPID. I can not multitask in windows the way I can in ubuntu with the 4 screens to work on(dont know what you call it)

Just wanted to tell someone. lol

Oh yes, I predict a good gaming future for linux with Humble bundle catering for linux and Steam coming on board.
I also read a rumor that Blizzard(the Diablo 3 people) might be bringing out a linux client for some game.

And then you have web app integration like gmail, linkedin and facebook. This is an awesome feature i must tell you.

I am just bummed about one thing. I cannot use visual studio to do my dev work in. but if I build a new pc then I will just add a virtual machine for my dev enviroment.

Oh and another thing. Well this is a question. Is it true that linux has not viruses? How is the linux security vs windows?

Goodbey windows. Hallo Linux.

False. Linux does have viruses. Just not as many, and with the security linux has, its more difficult for a virus to spread.

Well, have been testing Linux Mint 14 (Mate) for about two weeks and this weekend will be using it as my primary OS. It's goodbye windows for me as well.

As for the viruses, I heard that with windows most apps can install in the background without the user giving permission. On Linux though, you need to input your password for apps to install but you can still get viruses.

I can be wrong though as I am also new to Linux

You do get viruses for Linux.

But, due to the way unixes is designed, viruses can't damage system files that easily. Unless you run as root the whole time, then you get what you deserve. :D

I've been toying with the idea of installing a Linux distro instead of Windows when i buy my new machine (or laptop if I can get it without Windows :( )

I've had Ubuntu as a dual-boot option for many years and have been impressed with how well most tasks work in Linux. However, until I can play my favourite gaming titles and need to fiddle under the hood much, much less, it won't be my sole OS of choice.

FYI, most virusses spread through social engineering. they even took to phoning you physically. the person on the other end was really perplexed when I said I don't run windows, I run linux, lol

Viruses sadly exist on linux, but for much different purposes that on windows.

If you only do C# development, check out monodevelop as a very nice dev ide that looks almost exactly like earlier versions of VS.NET.

linux is terrible on the desktop. Its gonna stay that way for a while.
Ubuntu should stop mucking around and switch to e17 already.

Linux is awesome...if it actually worked on most machines. I tried installing Ubuntu 12 on two different laptops and the bloody Nvidia cards simply didn't work. And as easy as they think they have made it, you still have to fscking sudo apt-get install everything, or at least that is the only advice you really find on the net. And fixing issues is always done via the terminal which is just pathetic as well imo. As well as loading repositories and headers and other schit that just isn't intuitive.

I'm still waiting for a linux variant that works properly with nvidia cards and doesn't require proficiency in programming language to navigate...

Unfortunately the windows tax will be there :(

You could always go Dell and wave the tax. http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?s=gen&c=us&l=en&cs=&k=ubuntu&cat=all&x=0&y=0

There is the refund option as well, take it to Microsoft tell em you do not agree and they should refund the tax (NOTE if you want to go this option you should not hit I Agree on EULA when you power on the laptop)

Personally the XPS is fighting with my mind as I do not need a laptop but it does look sweat.

Erm, also, viruses are patched the next day..... Its not just the security, its how quickly a patch is released.

To the OP. Welcome to the Linux world. Drop Visual Studio and go for a language like php and make more money :D

Suspect your issue might be Optimus related. Some distros claim to have proper support for this but I have never tried it as I don't have a Optimus based laptop. Fault should lie with nVidia as they don't provide linux support for it so the linux peeps have to reverse engineer schit.

One machine used Optimus and the other didn't. Both had the same issues - would not load Unity. And no amount of following any number of guides solved the problem...

Was away for a week and tried reading the forums on my phone, first decent connection I have...

I was just about to reply the same, sure there are viruses for Linux, but they are patched so fast it is negligible. If you update everyday then you are more secure than someone on Windows with the best anti-virus on the market.

Devils spawn :D I recall there also being a problem with unity & nvidia at some stage.

Don't most Linux distros also run some form of ClamAV by default which greatly decreases the virus risk? I know OSX does this, or always did in the past.

Something Windows only caught up to recently...actually having an anti-virus system built-in...fancy that.

Nope, none of the distros I know and reviewed (over 20 of them) have any AV installed by default.

Thats funny, because I had no issues getting the NVidia drivers working on my gaming pc on Ubuntu.
