Supports PPPoE, Dialup, ISDN etc

Headend
Tower: Mintek (82 was 12) - Signal: 19% - Firmware: 4.2.1.8 - 128k - Smoothwall and PPPoE

As noted by HEADEND, use Smoothwall for this. You can use any distro flavour you like - check the latest distro list on
http://www.distrowatch.com/

Distros can be rather large - for the GUI-type 'usr-friendly' ones, expect at least 3xISO images (about 2,1Gb in total), so you may be better-off getting hold of some CD's (try
http://www.linuxwarehouse.co.za/shop/index.php
and go to 'Linux CD Sets')

My personal preference is Gentoo Linux, which you can strip down to the barest essentials and easily update via the portage facility - it's not for the faint-hearted, though...

My choice is Mandrake, and for the proxy you could use Squid.
Mandrake is pretty big (3 CD's) but if since you just over the mountain from me if you want we can arrange to meet and write you a copy.
Mandrake's advantage is it is really designed to be more user friendly (ie better GUI, and GUI tools).

I never tried (or even looked at) SmoothWall so I can't comment on if it's good or not.

Oh if you want to download Mandrake, you can get it, plus a few other distros (including what mbs recommends, Gentoo), at ftp://ftp.is.co.za/linux/distributions/

If you're looking for a small easy to manage highly secure firewall with nat and all the other bells and whistles I HIGHLY recommend smoothwall. Excellent program!

Hey CANNON - if you compiled from the kernel source then it's not a distro, strictly speaking, unless you wanna call it CANNONBALL LINUX or sumpting, and make it available to SHADOW... [:p][:p][:D]

Can I throw in another question - which distro is the best to set-up ip wireless on?
Can you compile rodent's driver on any kernel?

hehe i built it from source and distro it for a small installation fee :)

start with a working linux distro compile a compiler from source ... compile glibc ... some core uitils ... install all into chroot partition chroot and compile source of required goodies ...

it is good fun and you learn plenty from the exersize ... just recently cross compiled and built x86_64 for me amd 64bit from "cannonball linux" as you put it

LOL - great stuff, CANNON! For SHADOW - you can go the same route as CANNON, but it depends on how comfortable you are with getting your hands dirty. You can start with a working distro like Knoppix, or even our own Impi Linux (I think its based on Debian), and work from there. All you need are the necessary compilers and libraries to sort out any dependencies for the apps you want. Come to think of it, maybe it's best to ask RODENT what he used and/or what he recommends (I remember reading somewhere that he used kernel 2.6 I think) - THERODENT: are you there? Please post some advice for SHADOW...

Smoothwall is great but for absolutely the easiest, most idiot-proof and most feature-rich firewall/proxy I have ever used try Censornet - www.censornet.com. It is a purpose built Debian distribution that requires a dedicated machine, though. The management interface is easy and powerful and you can even throttle individual user's/pc's bandwidth through your firewall.

I love Linux but only play with it over weekends - hence my flavour of choice is SUSE 9.1 Personal and if you can afford it the Pro edition kicks XP's butt bigtime. But unless you want to learn Linux, go with smoothwall - I saw a post the other night that had step by step instructions how to set it up with MW.

For Wireless Networking SUSE 9.1 has some nifty tools and the most drivers I have ever seen.

So adopt a Penguin Today...It's the right thing to do!

Compiling from source as a noob can be tricky, but if you want to real bad - check out LFS distro, its docs will help a lot

EDIT: LFS = linux from scratch ... what regardt said below

If you would like to follow loosecannons example just start off with www.linuxfromscratch.org. Might not be ideal for a beginner but teaches one a lot about linux in general.

Only 2.6 kernels will work for Rodent's IPW drivers ...

Unless you want something to work without having to design it.

If everybody needed to be an electric engineer to understand everything that happens when you flick the light switch then we'd still be in the Dark Ages without electricity.
Same goes for a car. If you needed to know what happens with your car (apart from being able to drive) when you turn the ignition key .ie. electrons running throught the circuits and eventually turning the starter motor .. then we'd all be with The Flintstones.

Go for Smoothwall as mentioned previously.
Requirements: 1 old dedicated PC (anything above PII for the latest version)
2GB HDD
64MB + RAM
No VGA except for setup, so on-board is ok
CD ROM for installation. Can do ftp installation too, but then you need a FDD to boot from
Keyboard for installation only (or if pc won't boot without it)
2 NIC's
Ethernet cable from nowire for modem

Or, you could make the best decision ever and opt for an apple system running Mac OS X... switching to apple was the best thing I ever did.

</end shameless punt for macs ;D)

Shame on you Donovan :)
And go and replace all your windows software.... if you can get all your stuff to run on OS X

From what I can gather on the forum there is still no USB solution for IPW modem in Linux. Is there a specific reason?
