A local IT shop will charge me R500.00 to reformat my hard drive and install a very good version of (Linux full package)
Am I better of just downloading it from a local Linux Mirror and installing it myself.

Bare in mind I have nerver formatted my harrdisk before and I am new to Linux and the fact that there's so many versions confuses me.

Please help and thank you

Download and install your own! Cheaper if you using IS bandwidth, and use a local mirror to get updates. You're always better off doing your own install, because that's where the learning starts. Why skip a step?

Which "very good version of (Linux full package)" are you planning on installing? For local help, I would find a local LUG (Linux User Group). There is one in CT, known as CLUG. They have a useful mailing list.

Ja, I would do it myself.

Make sure you have backed up the data you will want to keep to cd-rom or external HDD before you do the installation.

You can start off with Ubuntu 8.10, and try opensuse 11 at a later stage.

I think that price is right because its about 2 hours of work at a rate of R250 per hour, which I think is what they are actually doing: charging for time to do the work.

When installing linux, it should will automatically format the hd for you and its even easier if you plan to install Linux on your whole hard-drive without any partitions for windows.

Just a question...I am planning to split the HDD, something like 80GB Windows, 40GB Ubuntu. Just for trying out Ubuntu. How does one switch between the petitions?

When you create the partition, you can do something like this. It will also install a boot menu, that will enable you to choose which OS you want to boot at startup. You have to restart to change OSes, but remember that while Windows can't see the Linux partition, Linux can see the Windows partition.

The other half the fun is breaking it and then fixing it....uh wait that means we have 3/2 which uh, means that Linux is about 150% fun :D

Oh yes, I did that with 8.10 and the Nvidia Drivers. After hacking it a bit and getting it working again, I then canned the entire partition and installed Ultimate Edition 2.0! :D

I am a total newbie when it comes to Linux. Took the plunge, downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 and found it very easy to load. First ran it from the disk I created though, but the loading part was easy. Am I missing something?
