Great news, FF50. Hopefully you'll also enjoy the experience. I agree with playing a little more with Ubuntu first. In my case, I first got the basic stuff going, like 3D drivers (NVidia for me), MP3's and DVD playback, which familiarises one quite well. Ensured that I could access my NTFS partitions and surprisingly also the shares on our other WinXP PC.

This took up a week of fiddling for an hour after work. Then I noticed that "Desktop Effects" was already available under "Preferences" and that lead me to reading lots about making Compiz Fusion work with Feisty. The actual install-process was near-painless and smooth.
 
I like the Ant with headlights screen saver. I reckon it is worth installing just to see the little guy wonder around the screen.

How / where do I see how much disc space I have available?

Google for APTonCD, this program will produce a nice CD of all the apps (debian files *.deb) you installed and their dependencies.
 
Click "Places" -> "Home Folder" and in the bottom right of the window it will tell you how much free space you have.

Alternatively, "Applications" -> "Accessories" -> "Terminal" then type "df -h" .

I'm trying out pcBSD to see it's more UNIX-like features.

The new graphical loader is wonderful and the backend is freeBSD6.2 so it's up-to-date.

Once I had got around some problems with the ACPI not working, it was quite impressive - esp at high res. All the packages are included too.

Now if I could just get the Internet connection sorted. I'm struggling to get a mobile phone to connect via the USB cable.
(HELP!)

It seems to see my USB stick OK (newly released as well).

A whole HOUR OMG! That stuff was all so easy for me on pcBSD1.4. They had so many Nvidia choices, I thought they must be advertising.

The desktop is very crisp too. There's a huge amount to play with here.
 
How do I install drivers for this:

Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)
 
Go to www.freedomtoaster.org check where the closest one to you is and go burn your flavour of linux for free. Just take disks with.

I went to the one at Monash University in Peter road, works well
