Ok here's the problem.
I've now got my whole home's pcs running on ubuntu. My internet is still capped, so when the updates start, its quite a lot of cap being downed.
Is it possible to have a server running and when updates are needed it goes through the server.
If the files are not there, the server fetches them, and the pc fetches them from the server. When the second pc needs updates, those files which are on the server gets fetched immediately, while those that are not will get fetched by the server first.

Is this possible?

I know its possible to download the whole mirror onto a server and keep that updated, but I'm already short with cap.

I hope this makes sense.

Yes it's possible. Look into Apt-Cacher & Apt-Cache

You can also just install squid on one of the boxes, and set them all to use the proxy. Set Squid's disc cache large enough, and you'll save a ton of bandwidth.

apt-mirror is what i use. Easy to setup, and once all the downloads are done, you have your own local repository.

Not quite the solution you're looking for but a IPCop v1.21 box with the Update Accelerator addon will do exactly what you want not only for Linux distros (yum & apt) but Windows updates & Anti-virus etc as well. Needs a little fine tuning to set up properly but once it's running you won't look back.

ok so what can us windows users use to do the same thing?

Don't know what ISP you're with, but in case you're with Telkom: there are local servers around. ftp.up.ac.za is one of them. I think some of the other universities also mirrors the larger linux distros.

Ah, lekker :) Dude, you just saved me a ton!!! I was wondering what the addon name was for this... couldn't quite remember. Anyways, off to go download Update Accelerator...
