Isn't Load Reduction where they turn off areas where the illegal connections are for the peak periods?

Seems like a perfectly reasonable response if SAPS can't create a safe environment in which to go and remove the illegal connections.

Well if this happens because of illegal connections why not sort out the root problem. Paying customers will be happy and non paying customers can start paying and contributing. Eskom will be happy, municipality will be happy. Grid will be happy. It's a win, win.

With load reduction it's reducing available hours, not KW.

But if you have one of these new fancy smartmetres, they can cut you off if you go over the allowed amount. This is what is so dangerous in the wrong hands.

Even if there was the political will to fully deal with this, every illegal connection that's removed gets replaced. They can't arrest thousands of people either.

because when entities like Eskom and CP send people to disconnect those illegal connections and service the transformers they get attacked. Sometimes they even get killed. When they finally do rip those connections out they're just back the next day.

If the safety of the technicians can't be guaranteed then rather just cut the area off. CP can't realistically be expected to do anything else.

As much as I think CP is an utter mess, they can't be blamed for the lack of safety. That's SAPS' fault.

I still don't understand this argument. As though they won't just disconnect you entirely as a far less desirable alternative.

It's no more or less dangerous than the cutoff switch to the transformers being in those very same hands. It's just less inconvenient for the homes with the smart meter because at least they get to run some stuff.

In this case it's mostly low income areas, so much of it is likely illegal-use related. However the meters could become an abused tool by an abusive authority.

Actually Eskom do load reduction as well and have been since 2020, though they've been quiet recently

Yeah, but for now we not affected. I would be happy with the 10A load reduction they were testing in Fourways so I always have power. The only thing I was thinking when I first heard it announced (last year?) was how the F was I going to work that we were in 'load limiting' on my home assistant so that heavy draw appliances wouldn't turn on during that time. Anyway a problem for the future.
