If that's the case, I prefer having load shedding back ... at least I could plan around the schedules. Yesterday I had 10 (TEN!) power cuts of between 2-8 minutes each ... just long enough to cause havoc with electronics/clocks.

Are you sure that was due to load shedding?
 
Well a power issue then :/

And it was the neighbourhood as the robots in the area were all offline this morning.

Last week we hadn't cut our consumption by the required 10% but it seems that over the long weekends we did. Or rather the municipalities have managed to do it though controlling our geysers.

Pull the other one.

The idjits were close to collapsing the grid completely.

There are a lot of faults in different areas on the network in Gauteng. And then, we also have problems caused by people who abuse alcohol/drugs and then drive into a pole carrying the main 11kV feed plunging approximately half of Fourways into darkness.
 
I think the loadshedding was induced by Eskom to try and justify their 50% tariff increase (and which I'm sure would've gone for fat cat salaries).

Can't prove it, just that I got a funny feeling about this.

I was at Eskom this afternoon, no real shortage of money but a real shortage of electricity.

The 10% saving was achieved by City Power and other municipalities turning off the geysers for hours in the mornings (typically 6:30AM onwards) as I observed, but I decided to keep quiet until I was sure of my facts. That and other measures such as turning off streetlights at night after 9PM of which I do have documented proof- have the telegram that was sent via ripple control, to effect this, in my logs, on my PC.

You forgot to mention the shortage of skills and the lack of brains in management.

You'll not find too many folks here that are that gullible to believe that all of a sudden the consumers have saved 10%.

There aren't too many municipalities with the capability of remotely switching geysers, so I'm not falling for that suggestion.

Switching off the street lights at 9pm is well past the peak, so that has no bearing on the generating capacity being incapable of peak demand.
 
Loadshedding returning soon, got a call from eskom today and they explained that they shedding 45% of load. Somehow I think one of the reactors over here need refueling or servicing.
 
The residential "sector" accounts for only 17.5% of overall electricity consumption in ZA, it does however have a high peak demand.

I'll reserve comment on that until I've met with more senior people at Eskom. The folk I met the other day were some very clever people, with PhD's and MSc's.

Of course the customers have not saved, it's been a bit of a wangle and even Eskom believes that to be the case. I read my earlier post and I see I conveyed myself incorrectly apologies for that. The power was defnitely saved, to a factor somewhere short of 10% by some means but certainly not the customers, no ways have the customers saved 10% and that's what I meant. Apologies for not making myself clear on that point.

That is right yes but a lot more have installed the technology since 2005. I am also likewise not suggesting they used this as a sole means to reduce consumption. Where I live, they certainly have. I cannot be everywhere at once and privvy to all details so I think that, where I live at least, something was saved by turning off our hot water in the mornings and in the evening peak. I am not concerned at this stage about the country as a whole, my current focus is on Gauteng where the majority of the municipalities do have remote control systems. So I am thinking at least a percentage of the total percentage reduction obtained must have come out of that, at least.

No it doesnt' and not what I am saying. What I am however saying that they are doing that, even though it doesn't make sense. When the crap first started in 2006 with the "bolt incident", they turned the streetlights off at around 7PM. However as you can imagine they are a bit clueless so they do it at 9PM in the evening on occasion.

My focus is not on what is being done (or not being done) as I will readily admit the current means of DSM in SA is a total f**k-up and this is why Eskom is busy with folks like me (they came to me - I didn't approach them) in formulating a more reasonable and sane approach, with much haste. The municipalities are much of the problem aswell, they can't even manage the ripple control system properly. The things I have seen occur on the network, have much amused me and annoyed me of course when they cut the power for no good reason. And when I phone my contacts there they blame some poor hapless orc in the control room or they blame the equipment for being antique.

That is correct, there is another factor that also comes into play in that this sector also has a relatively constant high demand when its cold or when its very hot and aircons are turned on to cool people down. Many people nowadays have aircons in their homes (myself included- I cannot tolerate the weather in summer and neither can my computers). And there is never any mention of the things I have seen because they always play the "race card" when these things are mentioned. I have seen people on the West Rand connect a steel shopping trolley (the old Checkers/Pick 'n Pay type) to the mains with automotive jumper cables in an attempt to make a heater. The usual result is a power outage of 2-3 hours, sometimes they get burnt or killed in the process. The other favourite of theirs is to turn up the stove plates, all four of them, to warm up the house. How wasteful is that and I have no doubt that contributes to the high demand in winter.

Wait. They switch the streetlights off, at night, when they're most needed? That makes no sense whatsoever (especially since you often see them on during the day, when they're not needed).

There are two separate causes for the "streetlights on during the day" phenomenon. Below is a cause under each control method

Photocell control method
The photocells/daylight switches suffer from welded contacts and the result is the lights stay on for a few days day and night until someone does something about it. The other cause is water getting into a photocell causing havoc.

Ripple control method

From observation in areas where I have lived:

* Corrupted data is sent on the mains via the ripple control system. The receivers used to control the streetlamps do not respond and the lights stay on. I have seen a case in the last 4 weeks, one morning where the lights wouldn't turn off in Wilgeheuwel Ext 12 and they kept sending repeated transmissions untill all of them eventually went off. It was easy to see why, the command code used was corrupted due to signal level dropping off during the transmission.

* Some ripple receivers are designed to turn the load ON after a random delay when power is restored. The Zellweger RM1+ functions in this way unless it is programmed otherwise. I guess, that some places they've forgotten to disable this feature.

* Some suburbs have old electromechanical ripple receivers, and they tend to get out of synchronization with power fluctuations and it can take as many as two full transmissions to get it back in step.

As for the turning off the streetlights thing. I am still trying to find out why it was done, an official answer, but it was defnitely done. The lights were turned off purposely and deliberately and I saw this on the actual data transmitted.
