After seeing some strange things going on earlier this month with the Telkom stats, I was wondering if local bandwidth is now still being included in the cap that each account has?

I need to download some pretty big ISO files from the local Ubuntu Linux mirror, but am unsure if this is going to come out of my two 1Gig accounts with Telkom.

How are they dealing with local bandwidth now?

(BTW, I installed Ubuntu on my MacBook last night and it runs very nicely under Desktop Parallels 3.0 - I now have an itch to get Kubuntu which is about 680MB's).

Some people report local not affecting the cap and some people that it does affect the cap, not much more I can tell you.

you must have searched for naked dogs if you reckon there was nothing useful that turned up in the last day or so

I just searched again using "local bandwidth" and I got a lot of waffling, but nothing that can answer my question concerning the counting of local bandwidth towards the international cap.

Maybe I should re-phrase this: if I use my Telkom 1GB a/c to download the Kubuntu ISO from the local mirror, will that 680MB's come out of my international bandwidth or not? (i.e. if I hadn't used my account for anything else would I be left with 1GB of international data or only 344MB's?).

Capisce?

See my post above.

Geez, can anyone give a conclusive answer?

I wonder if maybe what I should do is switch back to my exhausted international account from earlier this month, type in the URL or FTP address and see if it works?

Anyone have the IP of the local Kubuntu mirror?

my 2c,

i have a 3gb Ti acc.

have been capped at 3.2gb.

local is stil working - and as far as i can see the daily telkom usage email doesn't show any additions.

so i recon they can sort local/intl traffic.

just the mil$Q....free?/uncapped??/throttle???/whatsgonnahapppen :)

lol @ AmaZulu - i understand your frustration

The truth is, no one knows really?

All i can say is that i've been DLing locally and all the usage appears under "Local Usage for November" from http://adsl.telkomsa.net

It does not appear under "Blended Usage for November".

Therefore, what i can conclude from my personal test, is that NO, it will not use international cap

Now all we need is a few more people to test as well and confirm this :D

Sorry i couldnt give a definate answer, but i dont want to say something for the sake of it and get your hopes up

Well, I switched back to my exhausted 1GB account and am currently d'loading the ISO file. It's 697.1MB's and coming down the pipe at an average of 39kB/sec. I started the DL at about 8pm and as I type this it's at 48% complete. Another 02:36 minutes to go...

I wasn't going to take a chance on using what's left of my other 1GB a/c.

But thanks to those of you who tried to answer the question.

Well here is my 2c's

After reading the news article on MyADSL about Telkom not charging for local while they are in their "testing phase" I decided to do my own testing.

I have a 3 gig Telkom account. I was only on 1.8 gigs today but I decided to purposely cap it to see what all the fuss was about.

So I started downloading... Once the account reached 6 gigs it was capped, during this time I was checking the new tracker on the Telkom site. It was only affecting the "Blended Usage" (i.e. precious international being used for local content) while I was in the non-capped state and I was only downloading local content.

It was only after I was capped that the "Local Usage" stats started to work.

So in short, what happened to me means that you have to use your first 3 gigs to be able to use your "uncapped" local. At the moment the situation is quite cool as Telkom are currently not charging for the uncapped local usage (because they are in their "testing phase"). However once testing is over things will be worse than they were before all this local talk came about. Like for instance the fact that Telkom is no longer soft capping. So we are going to end up with less than we had before.

But maybe they won't start charging (we can still hope :) ) So happy downloading

it really sucks there's no seperation of local and international bandwidth throughout
