Local bank introduces biometric identification

If you think about it, biometrics is the way to go with banking. IMO if all banks had biometric systems in place they could do away with FICA. There is no better way to "identify" your client. Okay, biometrics wont take care of the fact that you have to verify your address, but seriously, that leg of FICA is a waste of time. If I wanted to give a fake address, it would be easy to make one up and fabricate documentary evidence pointing to my fake address.

What I do find strange however is that capitec is introducing it. Small bank, maybe thats why? Also, Capitec I think is the bank preferred by people with nefarious intentions.

Expect to see alot more chopped-off-finger related crimes.

:(

After reading the article the following thought popped into my head:
Capitec should change their slogan to "All your base are belong to us"

I don't want to know how IBM discovered this, but they have a fingerprint scanner that knows if the finger is still attached to a living being or not ...

A BIG step backwards in crime capital SA

This is the point where being robbed can LITERALLY cost an arm and a leg. :)
Now instead of just giving over your bit of plastic and calling yourself lucky :(

Expect people to be ridden around in the boot of a car until eventually all their money is finished -- by which time they probably will be as well.

WHY do people think that they can import these "clever" systems from FIRST World countries and make them work here ????????

it does give you higher level of security but is by no means fool proof as demonstrated by mythbusters. the static one is more prone to this problem other than the swipe finger print detector.

So if your ID number is stolen in ID theft you could always get a new one - it's possible, changing your eye colour, height and fingerprints is a little more difficult. Biometrics is actually bad from a privacy POV.

They take your photo and your fingerprint when you open an account, but with their small number of atm's most transactions are done at Pick 'n Pay or Checkers where one can draw up to R3000 per day for R1 a transaction. (Cheaper too, actually, than at a branch OR an atm. ) So the biometrics are fairly useless in preventing the emptying of one's account once someone gets the card and pin.

At least they might suspect something when a guy comes into the branch carrying your head AND your finger.

After reading the article I gleamed this bit of info.
the system is used in-branch when a client opens an account and any time they need to liaise with a consultant thereafter.
Unless I missed a reference to this technology being incorporated into ATMs.
