In the Namibian desert...
Those of you that know me from previous posts will know that I am lucky enough to live in town that is inside a National park and to the effect we have Jackals, Gemsboks, Springboks,Ostriches and the odd Hyena wandering our streets...

It is not uncommon to see traffic stop whilst a gemsbok crosses the road.

Anyhow, a lot of dog owners are causing problems.....

I received this email from a local resident...

"Dear friends ~ today I saw this ... which I am sure a number of you did.

When will it be realised that there is a cycle being initiated here. Domesticated animals start taking down wild animals and they will continue to do so. People leave their gates open in town because they do not want their dogs to faeces in their yard; because they do not want to feed their dogs; because they are too lazy to close their gates on their way to work.

At night they do not check that their pets are back in their yard; they again do not feed their animals; do not give them the attention required.

For some reason there is this thought that by neutering or spaying your animal you are taking away their manliness when in fact you will be:

Promoting their life, preventing additional expenses, preventing unwanted litters.

Are we waiting for a child to be bitten??

This after seeing earlier in the week how a herd of young ones gathered at OPS.

By far it is not the dogs f ault – it is the human who is at fault!

They should be taking responsibility for what is in their care.

Not only do they have pets in their care but also nature on their doorstep

which should be taken care of for generations to come."

They'll definitely attack someone one day. But it's interesting to see dogs revert back to being hunters although they did waste perfectly good bok meat.

So why the artificial distinction between domesticated animals and wild animals? Surely dogs are part of nature?

The frustrating thing about dogs is they will often kill for the fun of it, and not to eat. On family farms we have had packs of dogs get into a sheep pen and kill 10-20 animals :( they hardly even eat one.

...dogs to faeces in their yard...

The word is defecate...

@ Mortymoose -- aren't there laws/guidelines that these residents have signed in agreement to abide by while living inside a national park?

Can't they simply have their animals confiscated or simply be kicked out?

Surely the mine can just enact rules that require domesticated dogs to be kept inside the property at all times, unless on a leash, and if they are found outside the property they're confiscated until the owner pays a fine or something?

We have wild rabbits in our complex and the dogs are annihilating them with people even encouraging their dogs to chase them or trying to hit them with their cars.

People have no sense and it annoys me no end.

No sense? I think people are just plain ****ed up.

Initially the entire town was run very strictly by the mine, if you did'nt toe the line, they fired you ..... back in the day, you could be a hard working artisan, have a wayward son that breaks into a house, next thing you know, you get get called in by the mine and YOU get fired and told to get out of dodge.

Now we are in a grey area, mine still owns everything, but the town has been proclaimed a municipality with a council..... but we still don't pay rates and taxes, no by-laws in place...... back in the day (again) if a dog was found wandering the streets, it was removed by the mine, you had 7 days to claim it, otherwise, the dog was put down....

Now nobody performs that function and the dogs run amok......

For what it's worth, it is of my opinion that the gemsbok above was not killed for food, but more a plaything....

All hell breaking this side.... accusations flying, heads gonna roll, blame game, but not matter the outcome, something is about to change..... me thinks the day's of dogs savaging wildlife are about to come to an end.....

At times you get dogs just wandering past that don't even bother the beasts...... it's usually when the dogs are in groups that they go mental!

Here's another snap taken in our town...

I see that somebody from our town submitted a photo to the Afrikaans daily in Windhoek, the pic shows the pack of dogs attacking a young oryx!

This problem is still continuing in my wee town, yesterday a pack of dogs attacked this pregnant female gemsbok.... Made a meal of her face.

A local resident managed to get rid of the dogs and got the bok into her yard for the night.
