Local Download Site

What would you guys think of a local download site for ADSL users that has.

1. All the lastest Microsoft Updates etc, Media Player etc

2. All the latest Linux Stuff from sourceforge etc

3. Symatec downloads and General security download also from Cisco

othing Illegal bu all the stuff you have to go international for normaly just to keep you pc or network updated as well as new firmware etc ?

The problem is, there's not much hope of anyone having the kind of time/bandwidth/money to setup such a local service, unless they charged a fee.

The last slackware release - 10.1 - I ended up buying as it worked out cheaper getting it on 2 CD's than getting another 3gig account - plus there was no local FTP site with the release on it.

I was also looking for slackware 10.1 a few weeks ago, but luckily found it on ftp://ftp.saix.net/pub2/linux/distributions/slackware/slackware-10.1-iso/

But a local sourceforge mirror would be excellent!

Someone will need a massive amount of bandwidth to do mirroring like that... the next thing is most of the microsof stuff is applied via AutoUpadte.

Its a brilliant Idea, but geez, you'll need at least 100mBit link to do that sort of mirroring.

There used to be a local mirror of the old cdrom.com that was kept up to date - but I guess that was a time when "broadband" over here meant a 256k diginet line that cost R20000 per month !

The ISP ftp sites are really slow to update - but I guess they feel the pinch too in terms of bandwidth costs.

If Telkom had any kind of foresight, which we all know they don't, they could easily provide mirror ftp servers for local downloading - it would cost them next to nothing and the maintenance would be totally minimal, as they could just use mirror scripts to keep things updated.

I'm sure Telkom would... and they'd charge you R500 / GB download. LOL

i can run a 100mbit us server but it wouldnt do u any good!!!!
